    Progressive Cookie dough...?

This may seem like a dumb question, but has anyone got such a recipe, or done anything like this?

Let me clarify. I was craving cookies, and what a waste to buy them when I want MY kind of chocolate chip cookie. (as if *I* need cookies) Looking at the amount of dough it made, I was wondering..

Could I take a basic dough, make a few cookies, add some ingredient, make a few cookies, add another ingredient....

Do you see where I'm going? A progressive cookie dough, that will end up being something like a kitchen sink cookie....

Anyone ever done something like this? Any ideas of what would work in the progression? And the basic dough?

Don't see why not.  You may need to add a little extra liquid depending on what other ingredients and the quantities you choose to add.  After reading many posts you have made on here, I am sure you know what the dough will need to feel like to produce a quality product.

This will not work if you use eggs and perisables. Why don't you make a big batch and then freeze them in portions which would be to your size?? Or freeze the cookies on cookie sheets then put them in bags and only bring out to thaw the amount you want to bake???

    Re: Progressive Cookie dough...?

Hmm, I think I was unclear about the idea...the dough would be used up immediately...nothing would be sitting around. I have no freezer space, anyway...baked cookies would last a lot longer in the tin....

I meant, trying to save time, when cookie baking, let's say, for Christmas, or a BBQ, or a family gathering....making a huge batch of dough, baking up, say, a pan of plain cookies, and while it's baking, add something like coconut, prepare a pan of those, and while they're baking, add another ingredient, prepare a pan of those...

Really, in my laziness, I don't like to clean any more bowls than I have to, nor prepare any more separate doughs than I have to. In the past, I have badly mixed up recipes, when making more than one dough at a time, trying to save time.

Thank you for the kind remarks, momsays....yes, I've not made cookies much in the last few years, but I've been making them for well over 40 years, and am comfortable with the "feel" of a cookie dough, knowing the outcome, by the texture and consistancy of the raw dough.

I do this when I'm trying to please everybody (an impossible job). Start with a basic dough and divide it into pieces, how ever many kinds you want to make. You can add cocoa for chocolate cookies. Chopped apricots are good, as are dried cranberries, cherries, and of course raisins. Coconut is one of my favorites but not a favorite of some. Adding different kinds of chips makes cookies taste different. Adding oatmeal is the only problem, and you would need to add a few drops of milk/sour cream/yogurt to counteract the dryness that adding the oatmeal would cause. Or start with a basic oatmeal dough and add from there. The possibilities are endless.

Here's a link to an article that will make 10 cookies from one dough.

    http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/751057/how_to_use_one_cookie_dough_to_make.html?cat=22

And here's one for 4 types of cookies from a basic dough

    http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9A0CEFDC153DF935A25751C1A96E958260

And one that makes 5 cookies

    http://www.countryhome.com/recipes/bakingdesserts/fivecookies_1.html

I haven't tried any of these, so I can't rate them.  I found them by doing a search in Google, and entering "one dough several types of cookies".

I got a lot more links than these shown.  If these aren't to your liking, try a Google search.

I hope you find one that matches your tastes!

You can take a basic oatmeal cookie dough. Bake it for Day 1. On Day 2, add raisins. On Day 3, add chocolate chips. On Day 4, add pecans or walnuts. On Day 5, add toffee chips. On Day 6, add coconut. Is this what you mean?

Viola-I'm thinking the way CookieCarol is-and I BELIEVE what she's saying is what you are thinking of doing...........make, say, a basic chocolate chip cookie dough......add all the ingredients EXCEPT the chocolate chips.....take some of the dough out and place it in a small bowl-to that add some chocolate chips.....bake those.....while those are baking-take another small amount of the plain dough-stir in, say raisins and coconut...........drop those on a sheet and bake those...........while those are in the oven, take another small amount of dough and add white chips and dried cranberries........bake those-and keep adding something different to each amount of plain dough you take out of the main bowl, so in the end you'll have a variety of cookies out of one batch of chocolate chip cookie dough.  Is that right?  If so, I don't see why you couldn't do that at all........

If using one batch of dough, one bowl.....it would be like this

    "Pan" 1 oatmeal

    "Pan" 2 oatmeal and raisin

"Pan" 3 oatmeal, raisins and chocolate chips

    &c.

    Re: Progressive Cookie dough...?

I see no reason why it wouldn't work-you'd just be adding different goodies to one dough-but the basic cookie would cook at the same time and temperature...........I'd give it a try and see what shakes out! That would be an easy way to get a variety of tastes from one batch of dough..........

You are making me hungry. The beauty of this idea is that you can have them all!!!!! All kinds of cookies in one day....wow!

    "Pan" 1 oatmeal

    "Pan" 2 oatmeal and raisin

"Pan" 3 oatmeal, raisins and chocolate chips

Then you could add coconut (into the oatmeal, raisins, chocolate chips of Pan 3) in for Pan 4.  Then butterscotch chips to the already massive amounts of add-ins for Pan 5.  Then M&M's for pan 6.  How about some kind of nut for Pan 7?  I understand it better now.  I thought you meant a very basic tollhouse type chocolate chip cookie to start with.  If all you would be adding is "optional" type ingredients, it should go really well.  Please let me know if you try this and how it turns out.  I'd like to do the same thing without the oatmeal as I am supposed to avoid the whole grains. This might be a good solution to my kids burning out before the entire batch of cookies is gone.

    Re: Progressive Cookie dough...?

My thought was to start with something like a basic toll house cookie, without the choc chips or nuts, but maybe nutmeg in it....making a few cookies, then adding somthing....yes, the last would barely hold together!

And I was looking for a progression that seemed logical to people here....

    Re: Progressive Cookie dough...?

The only concern I would have is with adding in the oatmeal as it is a moisture sucker.   If you used an oatmeal cookie recipe for the initial pan and expanded from there, it should be, IMO, no problem.
