Yes -- I have one in the Zenith stereo system I bought in 1976 for about $600 (remember when TV's and stuff were reeeeeally expensive?).  The rubber belt inside wore out or else it would still work.  The turntable and tuner still do.

The tapes themselves are in sad shape -- the innards are crumbling.  Happens to us all eventually!  Big Smile

I used to copy my own 8-tracks, and have so many of them still- I bet one time thru a machine and they would shred.

Yes, and tapes!  Funny, I am the packrat of the family, but it's DH who won't let me throw out the player or the tapes.  I keep telling him that they won't ever be worth anything, but for some reason he just can't seem to part with them.

There is one in the pick up DS is restoring, LOL.

My family never had one.  Dad, although he conceded that the sound quality was better than the cassette tapes of the day, considered the 8-track bad technology.

DH had a portable 8-track system set up in his workshop and he had a lengthy, painful debate with himself when we moved.

    Take 'em or chuck 'em?

He chucked the whole thing...it worked intermittently but I most ceraintly remember them.

Hey...did anyone have a record player in their car????  DH did when we were dating.

Mine finally died. I remember when it didn't work, I would take a q-tip with rubbing alcohol and clean the heads.  Funny.  I had a bunch of homemade tapes too.  I remember how much I would hate when a song would get cut in half between tracks...they usually did it to the best song on the tape.  My mom still has one that works at her house, but the sound is so awful.  I think back then it was great.  Funny that as I write this, I have a satellite radio station playing on my computer...funny how times have changed

I think mine work. I don't know if the 8 tracks do, though.

    Anyone remember using reel-to-reel?  Confused

I can go back further than that....I have a working Victrola!  Love the sound from that.  I expect Rudy Vallee to start singing every time I crank it up.  Smile

Re: does anyone have a working 8-track player?

I had a Sony reel to reel in the '60's that I hauled around taping the performances of my children's choir. I taught elementary school music-that sucker weighted 54 lbs, but was professional quality in its recordings. I also had a couple of other reel to reels and did a lot of dubbing and re-recording to make tapes for the parents...Toni
