Did anyone see Paula Deen's cookie show?

If so, what did you think of her family recipe for "Sand Tarts"??

Those were "Pecan Crescents" if ever I saw any.  All the "Sand Tarts" I've ever known or baked are made from sugar-cookie type dough that's rolled and cut out (or molded in a mold - I've seen those, too).  There's an egg-white wash before baking and a sugar/cinnamon mixture sprinkled on top -- the "sand."  No nuts in the dough, unless you press a sliver of almond on top before baking.

Her cookies were a shortbread-type dough with lots of chopped pecans.  She formed the cookies into fat crescents before baking and rolled them in powdered sugar afterwards.

I've never seen a "Sand Tart" like that, have you?   Hmm

    Summer

I think you've been caught in Cookie-Baking land for too long now...

Time to step away from the MixMaster for a moment or two or three.

I've never heard of a sand tart before I saw her make them, but my mother has been making the exact same cookie for years only she shapes hers into balls instead of crescents.  They are really good!

only she shapes hers into balls

--Yea, like a Mexican Wedding Cookie or Russian Tea Cake.  Those I've seen, and they'd be about the same dough, but in balls, not crescents (like Paula's last night).

I swear Paula's "grandma" or whoever got her cookies mixed up.  "Sand tarts" my cinnamon!

I have seen some people around here that shape them into crescents, but we haven't.  Maybe she did get them mixed up!  LOL!  I fell asleep half way through the show last night.  But I thought the praline cookies looked really good.

my family made a similar cookie, only round.  the kids call them white mice, my aunt makes them big, so hers are affectionately called "rats"

Thank you!  I missed what she called hte cookies, and was wondering why she was putting them in a sand pail with the turbinado sugar. LOL!  I could see that the recipe is one I make in balls with walnuts instead of pecans, so it made no sense at all with the buckets. Stick out tongue

Looked like she put a couple of pounds of coarse sugar in that pail, and that stuff ain't cheapSurprise

I know it was auctioned for charity, but.....I wouldn't do that for everyone on my Christmas cookie list or I'd go broke.

I didn't see the show, but I love sandtarts made the way you described them. I do put a sliver of almond on top of the egg wash and then sprinkle witht the cinnamon sugar mixture.

I use  a dough similar to Paula's and roll mine into balls which makes a small round cookie.  We call them Pecan Sandies.

Do the same thing, Mexican wedding balls, I coat them in sugar while hot then re-coat while cool using walnuts instead of pecans.

Yep. I live a bit South of Paula (in Florida) and that's the only kind of sand tarts I've ever had.  They're good, too!  Maybe it's just a regional thing.
