What did you do to save money this week?

    Hi Everyone,

Haven't seen this thread for a week or so, so I just had to tell you about the bargain I got yesterday!

I was in our local grocery/fruit market and they had a whole pork loin on sale for $1.88 lb.  Because the sale date was 6/9/09, it was marked down again!  I got a huge pork loin for $12.49.  I cut it into 10 one inch chops, 2 pork roasts, and about a pound and a half of cubes for stew/whatever.   My DH couldn't believe it!  The going price around here for a pkg of loin chops is about $7 for 6 of them!!  (and they certainly aren't as nice as the ones I cut!)

I also got 7 lbs of ground chuck for $1.56 a lb.  Today I am going to do part of my once a month cooking with this.  I plan on making meatloaves, meatballs, and casseroles as well as some patties for the freezer.  If I have any left, I am going to put some lasagna in the freezer too.

What have you bought this week?  Would love to hear from all of you on what you are buying/doing.

Must be the pork sale week.  I got a $10 pork shoulder on sale for half price that I turned into a BBQ pork and had pulled pork for supper last night.  It was quite fatty when cooked so I put it in the fridge and let the fat set on top which I then skimmed off and the shredded the meat..  Enough in that for easily 3 meals for hubby and I.  I also got ground pork and pork chops at half off.

Our BIGG's grocery store is have 4 days (starting today) of triple coupons (up to 50c).  They are doubling up to $1, so my 75c will be worth $1.50 and $2 on my $1 coupons.  It will probably be a mad house, but I think I am going to go anyway.  Hopefully they won't be out of everything that is a good deal, since I am working during the day and can't get there till tonight.  I will post any really great deals I find.  Figure the best deals will be in cereal and HBA.

Took the kids blueberry picking today. We picked 3 gallons at $10 per gallon. This is a lot cheaper than the little boxes they sell at the store for $4 for a handful. Also picked fresh lettuce out of the garden for salads for dinner tonight. We had homemade bread, meatless pasta and salads. It cost around $4.50 for seven of us.

At the beginning of the week I bought strawberries for .88 cents per container. I made a double batch(16 jars) of jam out of them. I will be making a double batch of jam out of some of the blueberries also.

The garden is going strong and I hope to can a lot of produce this summer.

The BIGG's trip really panned out last night - they tripled up to 50c coupons and doubled my 60, 75c and $1 coupons!  Some things they were out of, but I really stocked up on cereal, dinner items and some treats for the family.  They has some great sale prices that combined with my coupons too.   I spent $30, but Saved $46 in coupons and $27 in in-store special prices for a combined savings of over 70%.  Some of the highlights were 4 boxes of Life Cereal for 49c each, 3 Boxes of various flavors of Mini Wheats cereal also 49c each.  Wacky Mac pasta for 19c, Barilla pasta Sauce for 90c, Salsa for 80c, Hellmans Mayo for $1 for a big jar, Breyers Ice Cream for $1, Pringles (2 cans) 49c each, a nice rubbermaid container for $2 (reg. $7), Kraft Shredded Cheddar and Philly Cream Cheese $1 each and much more :).  I may go back this weekend to see if the re-stocked some of the other items I missed.  Most of the stuff I am buying will keep.   If you have a BIGGs near you it is worth the trip - plus their staff was very helpful - asking in every department if I found everything and so patient with everyone and their stacks of coupons.

Well, last night, I took the clippers to my DS and DH heads.  They both needed a haircut really bad, and the heat is just so much.  So they got buzzed.  I did a good job, but cut DHs sidburns too high, it looks a bit funny, but like I said, give him a week, and you'll never know!  This saved me $19!!

I bought a used bread machine today for $8.  I have one, but I'm afraid it is trying to die.  so I'll save this one,  but first I'm going to bake a loaf and if I like the crust better I may retire the old one to DD's pile of stuff for her first apt.

One of our hardware stores had paper towels for 10 rolls/$4.00.  Got chicken breasts (bone in) at one grocery store for $1.00/lb.  And, I made another 10-gallon batch of home-made laundry detergent.

Re: What did you do to save money this week?

I got a surprise yesterday at CVS. I buy my milk there for TGLee for $2.99/gallon. After you buy 5 gallons you get one free! I got that coupon yesterday so I got 2 gallons for $2.99. We go through about 5 gallons a week and this promo is through July! Hopefully I can get more! My Publix store will take competitor coupons and GFS had a $5 off $50 in our paper on Mon. Used that this week and got the one out of my Mom's paper to use next week. Good until 6/27. I never spend less than $50! Will have lots of savings when I shop next week...good Buy 1 Get 1 in Publix ad. Juice, crackers, cereal, craisins, brownie mix, cake mix and lots more! Wish we had double coupons!

    Happy saving!

    Hi Dianefromderby,

We just had a new Aldi's open up near us and just stopped in long enough to buy some milk at $1.49 a gallon.  I thought that was a good price!

I haven't had enough time to actually go shopping there, but I will when I get back from camping next week.  What do you think of Aldi's?  Is the quality of their products pretty good?  Are there any that you have  found that you don't like?  I know they have bananas at 49 cents a pound as well as the milk, so that is a good savings for me-my family likes their milk and bananas!

I usually spend around $250.00 on groceries at this time of the month.  I'm only going to spend around $50.00, because we plan on moving in the near future and I need to let things dwindle down.  I will just need to buy milk, bread, eggs and produce and what ever is necessary.  I have been trying to make a menu from things I have on hand.
