Who has a GPS, which one, why?

Am looking for one, easy to use, not too complicated to get me around the city & surrounding area. Not too savvy about all the stuff out there. Wondering which one you guys recommend. Have done some comparison shopping on line and am still somewhat confused. Going to a couple of stores today, but just wondering. Thanks...

I've bought three over the past couple of years (graduation / birthdy gifts).  Every one a Garmin.  This brand seems to get the best reviews.

One of these days I'm going to buy one for me Big Smile

I have a Garmin Nuvi, mostly because I use one (a different model) at work, so I was already familiar with its format.  Also, I've read that Garmin has the most complete and current maps for the US (whereas, I believe TomTom has the most up to day European maps).

They're all fairly easy to learn.  The main differences are how the maps are displayed, and the size of the screen.  Overall, I recommend getting a larger screen if you can afford it, but beyond that, I'd say to go to some place where they have them turned on and you can look at the displays, and just pick the one which seems the most user-friendly to you.  I don't recall for certain, but I think we got ours Fry's Electronics, where they had a fairly good assortment we could look at.

    You ain't seen me. Right?

I have a Garmin. You can get a basic model for around $100 now. It's great to have but remember it's only as good as the information that was put in it so sometimes it is wrong.

I actually have the Google maps feature on my cell phone.  I was considering a GPS until I got that, now I can turn that on - click "find me" and it will give me a map of whereever I am within 400 yards.  I can zoom in to street level, pan left or right.  It's helped me out of a few jams.

Laugh when you can, apologize when you should, and let go of what you can't change. Life's too short to be anything... but happy.

I also have a Garmin, and got one with the W,its easier to see as I'm getting older every day. After researching online and talking with salespeople in different stores.

I have mine on the dash in a little "hemorid pillow". Its just a round container that it sits in and can be put away when in "the big city".

The 255T has traffic reports for major cities if you plug it into the cig lighter in the car. I don't think the 260 has that.

I have a Garmin Nuvi, because it was affordable.  Turns out it does a good job.

How did we ever live without a GPS? I love ours. We have Garmin Nuvi 205 that we got on sale for $99. They are on sale periodically. About a month ago, I saw a Garmin 255W on sale for $149. They are usually around $200. We broke one of ours so I am watching sales again. We used it when we drove to San Diego last Christmas and it was great. When you look for a GPS, you might want one that speaks the street names instead of just "turn right". Some of them show the street names but don't speak them. Also, ours shows the speed limit, how fast we are going, and the time anticipated to arrive at our destination. All excellent features.

DH drives a school bus for field trips in his retirement and he takes it with him not only to easily find a destination but also to find out where he can get something to eat or drink.  Just put in the name of a restaurant and it tells you the closest one and how to get to it. When traveling, we use it to find a Walmart or Sam's. Cool.

We have a Garman Nuvi and we just love it. It speaks the street names in advance so you have time to make a lane change. We also purchased one of those round 'pillows' as it makes it easier to move to a different car when needed and take it off the dash for security reasons. That was an extra $30. but worth it.

i have a garmin nuvi 350 - why? because that is what my kids bought me for my birthday. lol

the reason they picked this model is that it speaks the street names, has a good size screen, and is very user friendly. I highly recommend it. A feature that I find myself using often is the gas, shopping and foods locations. You can put in a specific store or restaurant and get the directions of course, but also ask it for all fast foods (or italian or mexican, etc) and it will show you all that are close. Sometimes I really want a Sonic or Wendy's and have no idea if there is one nearby - Garmin to the rescue. Another thing that I like is the reclculating feature. If you miss your turn, no worries, the gps will get you right on track again.

Re: Who has a GPS, which one, why?

I've had a  Garmin, a TomTom and one built into a Saab...hated them all.  What I LOVE is that for $9.99 a month with Verizon, I can get my phone to tell me where to go.  I can use it anywhere, power it up if needed with the car phone charger so I don't run out of power while driving...it has a color map, talks to you, gives very detailed instructions and is always up-to-date, unlike others that you have to have updated with software.  I didn't have to spend money on something extra and have to worry about it being stolen (one was stolen from the car, broken window and all that), and it fits in my purse...doesn't add any weight to my phone!  LOL

I would never use anything else now.

Re: Who has a GPS, which one, why?

DH has an iPhone and we use that a lot more than we ever thought we would. We had to go out of town to pick my sister up at the hospital and it helped usget there fast. Afterwards she wanted some chicken broth and it showed us the nearest Quiznos. Look at what your monthly fee would be and see if just getting a new phone would be cheaper. All providers have the ability, it is just that some phones have better aps.
