HL Topic of the week Oct. 11-17 Your Body's Hidden Talents

I'm starting this one a little early girls - but was afraid I wouldn't be able to get on here first thing in the morning.
This one is a little light hearted - but I thought it was sort of interesting
Like the 'needle' one - with it being Flu Shot time.....Stick out tongue

    Tap Your Body's Hidden Talents
There are stupid human tricks, and then there are these five awesome physiological feats

    Stop needle pain!
Make your next flu shot feel less piercing by putting pressure around the area that's about to be stuck, says Ross I. Donaldson, M.D., M.P.H., assistant clinical professor of medicine at UCLA's David Geffen School of Medicine. "Make a circle with your thumb and forefinger and push down for a few seconds as you're receiving the shot," he says. By stimulating receptors for pressure or touch, you can override nearby pain receptors in your skin. "It confuses your nerves, so a shot feels more like a gentle poke than a sharp jab," Donaldson says.

    Silence hiccups!
Take the deepest breath you can, hold it for 10 seconds, then, without exhaling, suck in more air and hold it for five more seconds. Finally—still without exhaling!—breathe in as much more air as you can squeeze in, hold for another five seconds, and exhale. Then breathe normally. This technique immobilizes the diaphragm (the muscle at the base of your lungs), preventing the spasms. Luc Morris, M. D., and his colleagues at the New York University School of Medicine tested the method on 30 patients who were prone to frequent hiccups. "It worked immediately on everyone who could do it," he says.

    Break a fainting spell!
Cross your legs, squeeze your thighs, and contract your abs. You can feel faint when your blood pressure drops and blood pools in your extremities. By tensing muscles, you keep your BP up and divert blood back to your heart and brain. University of Amsterdam researchers who tested muscle-tightening exercises found that they reduced the risk of passing out by 30 percent.

    Heal nighttime heartburn!
Feeling the fire? Sleep on your left side. This preserves the natural curve of the esophagus, which helps keep stomach acid from creeping up. (When you sleep on your back or on your right side, gravity straightens out the curve.) A study by Graduate Hospital in Philadelphia found that frequent heartburn sufferers had fewer episodes when they slept on their left sides than when they slept on their backs or right sides.

    Hold back tears!
If you're tearing up at an inappropriate moment, just clear your throat. "It interrupts the mechanism in the nasal passage and larynx that controls crying," says Rebecca Nagy, a Charlotte, North Carolina-based meditation expert. Plus, after you clear your throat, you tend to swallow. This lifts your tongue to the roof of your mouth, which blocks the soft palate, making you unable to cry. "I've suggested this technique many times to brides and grooms who had trouble getting through their vows," Nagy says.

I was really testing the 'hold back the tears' one tonight !!!!!
Nobody told me the movie "Marley and Me" was sad  [:'(]
Marley looks a whole lot like my dog Molly - - - who is old and has a hard time walking anymore.

dh is always doing the hiccup one.  Works for him.

    Have a great night all - - -
will be back as soon as I can tomorrow.

    Good Morning ladies!

Great topic this week Debi. Very fun :)

Regarding the squeezing your abs, crossing your legs, etc for fainting... this is really true! Fighter pilots use this when doing rolls and gaining elevation very quickly so that they dont pass out :)

I will have to try the heartburn thing. I get heartburn most nights, but am supposed to take meds for it. But will try the left side thing. Im a right side sleeper.

Needles, however, do not bother me. Im lucky there! Will try the hiccup one next time I get em, which is every couple weeks or so.

How is everyones Sunday morning going!? Mine is beautiful. I got up early and got my grocery shopping out of the way for the week of HL meals! Spent a lot of money... but am still excited! Tonight is Murils Swiss Chicken. Very much looking forward to that. Serving it with steamed rice and brocolli and carrots :)

Breakfast today was a bowl of oatmeal squares and a white choc peppermint latte from Starbucks.

Usually on Sundays I dont eat lunch, but I am going to have some boursin cheese with crackers today for a mid day snack!

Whelps, thats about it. Im off to write down the actual recipes for this week so I dont have to have the laptop in the kitchen.

     CoffeeGood morning to all  -
Natasha - I didn't know that about the Fighter Pilots - interesting  :)
I am a Needle Weanie !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Embarrassed
dh always goes and gives blood - - - I tell him I'm going to go with him sometime - - - he tells me I would never make it! LOL  I get sick at my stomach every time I get a flu shot or something.  I think I tense up.
Your Menu has gotten me wanting to organize our food for the week.

I'm a big 'body for life' fan - and he always says to go shop on Sunday for the week.  Maybe I should - he uses Sunday as his 'day off' from his workouts - and he eats what he wants that day - and shops for his week.  That way he keeps on track Monday - Saturday.

    Well - it's raining here again - and it's still in the 50's - - which is a good thing. :)
So maybe I will go downstairs and plan my menu - clean my house - rest up for the week ahead.
    I'm feeling better - no scratchy throat - -   yea! :)

He said:   Where does Natasha live, maybe she'll make me some Sausage gravy, because my wife won't make me any...............   LOLStick out tongue

    Good Sunday Afternoon!

I feel a lot better today. :)  I managed to get to church - was great to get out.

Debi, wonderful topic! Thanks for getting our butts in gear this week! BTW, you can go into the edit mode and add the Topic of week, etc.... trust me. Have fun! :)  Glad you don't have a throat tickle today- we don't need any more drama around here for sure. LOL  I have never seen Marley and Me but heard it is a tear jerker.

Natasha, hope you all like the Swiss Chicken as much as we do. The rice will give you something to use the gravy on. Yeah. :) Are you making it with or without the wine this time?

    B'fast: golden delcious apple

Lunch: grilled cheese, cup of progresso hearty tomato soup, few low fat kettle chips

    Supper: Unsure :)

Off to relax after I listen to the rest of the C'mas cd for our program. I have all the music now so can listen to it while I am on the computer. :)

    Re: Your Body's Hidden Talents

Liked the post, reminds me of useful trivia. I have read some of those Uncle John's Bathroom Reading that is has a lot of useless trivia, but some of it is funny. There was one that was justl about TX.

Not raining here but cloudy and chilly. Part of the park has water. Probably 75/80 fewer motor homes than usual. Rode the bike this morning and had to come back and more on another layer, my torso was cold. I had on gloves but they are those knit things and my hands were cold too.

Going back and read rest of post from yesterday that I didn't have time.

    Hi to everyone.

Thanks Muril - I think I fixed the Subject line with Edit.   Didn't know I could do that. Huh?

Hi Dusta - it's raining here - and has been most of the day.  Has been a good day to stay in the house for sure.
Do you like it better there without so many Motor Homes?

O.K. - we were kind of bad today Embarrassed
Just made some Cheese Dip - using the new Velveeta Monterey Jack instead of the usual.  It was really good too - - - - added some ground meat and onions to it - - - and yummy.  A Football watching snack...........
Had lots of water - hoping it won't stick to my innards! Angel

    Re: Your Body's Hidden Talents

Debi, lol at the sausage gravy. When I was reading through the recipe thread making my menu I saw that and was like... hmmm... havent had that in sooo long! Still not cold enough for it. I will make it first day snow is on the ground or something! I forgot you mentioned Marly and Me. I read the book first, and if you thought the movie was sad.... oh my word the book was even sadder just because it goes into more detail, andyou get so attached to the characters. I was reading it during work, bawling as customers were coming in. Hahaha. Good movie, better book :)

Muril, I am so glad you are feeling better today and got to make it to church. I love Christmas music, and listen to it yearly when Im in the mood while driving. My favorite christmas cd is Reba McIntire one... she has stories in it that she tells as well, its a Christian Christmas cd, so not just holly jolly songs, but hymns and such. Very good.

Am making the swiss chicken the first time with extra chicken stock, as thats what I have right now that needed used up. I will try the wine at some point though. The dish looked great when I put it in the oven, sean asked if we just "eat it now" haha. Raw and all.

TX Cookie, glad that at least there is no rain today for you. You need some better gloves if youre riding in the cold! Knit ones dont do much good against chill and wind.

Quiet here today on the thread....

My day was good. Worked from 10-2. Had some boursin herb and garlic cheese stuff with crackers and boy is that stuff good. I had never had it. There is a recipe under the label to make garlic bread from it. I bet its great! Made home made (frozen) dinner rolls to go with dinner. I sneaked one after they came out of the oven and they are taaaaasty! Love warm bread.

Seahawks are playing so we are watching that. They are kicking butt. Playing the Jaguars, and the score is 34 to 0! Haha.

Dinner will be done soon. I am gonna look through the papers coupons for stuff for holiday meal. If I start getting coupons now, hopefully I can save a bit on the holiday meals. Thanksgiving costs like $120 last year and no one wanted/could pitch in so I footed that bill... So gonna use coupons on what I can this year.

    Have a wonderful evening!

Oh, debi, had a question for you... I like velveeta dips too, but they always get gummy and hard so quick cant enjoy them sitting on the couch. Does that happen to you? It just cools too quickly.... the one you made today sounds great! I love monterey jack.

Dinner turned out great tonight! Muril, there wasnt much of a gravy or sauce to it though? Maybe I did something wrong. But it was still very yummy. we both enjoyed it!

    Natasha - about the dip
Yeah, I think they get thick pretty fast too - but we add a little bit of milk to make it creamier.
I just keep heating it up in the microwave to keep it runny.  Smile

I guess I just wasn't paying attention when everyone was talking about Marley and Me
I thought it was going to be a funny movie.
I always seem to love the books better than the movies  -  but don't think I'll read that one!   I would be bawling like a baby  LOL

    Raining here. Joy!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Good Morning.

Debi I miss the extra people. I talk to a lot of people when I am walking Lulu and they have their dogs. Not that she likes them but I do. The dogs, she likes the people. After people have been here a few days they ask me how long I ride the bike, how many miles. And then the people that I see from year to year tell me how good I look since I lost weight, which makes me feel good.

Muril I was thinking about the Pecan Sandies and wondering what they did to them. We use to buy them a lot, one of DH's favorites. And one thing that changes the taste of baked good is the fat. Maybe they have changed it, make it more "healthy", funny and ruined it. Cookies need butter or shortening to be good and now days that is considered bad choices.

Kris did you read my post in last weeks about Branson?

Hi everyone have a great day.

    Re: Your Body's Hidden Talents

     Good Morning~!

Good topic Debi - like you, I"m a "needle weanie" Big Smile   I'm a lot better than I used to be, being pregnant didn't give me much choice LOL!! but I can still do without.  I didn't know the fainting trick, I'll have to remember that. I've been known to pass out once in a while...

Dusta - sorry about the rain, flooding & the campground being so empty. That's not much fun :-(   Hopefully people will start coming back. You & Lulu need company :)  How has Mel been, is he feeling good and enjoying himself?

Muril - so glad you're feeling better ((((hugs)))). How is Miss Nancy doing? I had to giggle that your mom scolded you for being at Sam's :) Doesn't matter how old you are, you'll still get an earfull LOL!!!

Debi & Natasha - for the velveeta dip, I put mine in one of those small dip sized crock pots. I make the dip as usual then transfer it to the c.p. I use an extention cord to reach the coffee table & we eat while sitting on the couch watching the game or a movie or whatever. I do that with the hot wing dip too since it's easier to scoop  when warm.   We did the hot wing dip yesterday while we watched the Cardiac Cats pull out a win  Hmm

Debi - I grocery shop on sundays. I always go once a week, but over the years the day/night has changed due to our schedules. Right now sundays work best for me/us.  I try to go before lunch, then you miss the church crowds. It gets pretty busy when church(es) let out LOL!!!

a lot of cookie textures & tastes have changed - the Girl Scout peanut butter ones are awful now. At least for me, hardly any flavor, they used to be so good!!  Anyway, I heard a lot had to do with the Zero Transfat thing. Apparently the transfats added more flavor than we all realized LOL!!!

We had a good weekend - the weather has been so nice! The weather people have been amazingly wrong though, it's been the opposite from what they say it will be. Crazy.  We've been running around like crazy though, seems like we have a zillion errands and thing to do lately, it's always something!  Friday we hit Lowe's and BJ's. Saturday we put up the shelving we bougth at lowes, had to go back because dh didn't buy the right hardware. Um, had he listened to me we wouldn't have had to go back. But what do I know Wink

saturday was dh's birthday. We left Sam with the babysitter, went to the evening church service then to dinner. It was a really nice night.   Sunday morning I went for a run & grocery shopped, we watched the Panthers and that was pretty much it. A nice relaxing day for us.

I did figure out that I'm not eating as well as I should be. I've let junk food creep in again :( not a lot, but enough that I need to pay attention now!  So I'm revising my daily meals & snacks. Today is:

Breakfast - whole grain bagel & cream cheese, coffee

    snack - banana

lunch - salad with grilled chicken, oil & vinegar for dressing; water

    snack - honeycrisp apple

    dinner -  vegetable stew

hope everyone has a great day!!!

    dawn
