    Twinkle - The soup restaurant I went to on Friday was delicious.  I'm glad your party was fun - and also that DS is feeling bak to normal - you are so right, it is not easy to raise kids!  I think you handled that perfectly with your DS and said just the right things!  Good to read that DS arrived safely to England.

     

    picasso - I had never heard of this restaurant and found it interesting that you have one there - my first impression is that I really like it - not expensive and the sandwich I had - it was a Greek Sandwich, was delicious.  Not sure if you have the same menu at your Zoup but this sandwich had chicken, lots of feta cheese, red onions, some sort of spicy peppers but not too spicy to be bad, olives and I think that's it - it was all heated up in and oh so yummy!!!!!  

     

    Renate - I hope you got some of that serious cooking done that you wanted to yesterday!  I'm not sure what I'm fixing for dinner tonight - I need to come up with something still.  I bet your house smelled good yesterday if you did get a chance to do some cooking!

     

    Hello to Everybody!!!!!!!!

     

    We've had a busy weekend - went to the high school football game on Friday night - it was a big game with another school that our local school has a big rivalry with - a big group of us went & it was fun.  Yesterday we watched lots of football, or at least the guys did, I watched some, but tried to work on a project - I'm clearing off my dining room table that has stacks and stacks of papers, odds & ends, etc. that has somehow accumulated on it - I'm trying to find a home for everything where stuff belongs and throw as much out as I can too - those stacks of papers can sometimes have a life of their own!!!!!!!!  Last night we we watched the second half the Penn State game at a sports bar - DH said let's get some food for dinner and watch the second half there - I beat him to the car with an offer like that!

     

    Just wanted to pass through to say hello to everybody before I try to  finish up what I started in that room yesterday  - I hope you all have a great Sunday.!

    Heidi - thanks a lot... oh my clearing off stuff is something i just did a few weeks back..i give those piles names -lol even my laundry pile gets a name from time to time - thy feel like family members and tehy see and hear everythign -lol so i better treat them nicely -lol. Its a dreadful job.. i am glad to hear you had great food at the Zoup .. fun to find new restaurants and food places that have decent affordable selection. that sandwich does sound extremly good..I woul dhave flown to the car myself - never pass up a restaurant  orrfer or  chance to see the washroom -lol

    Shannon i baked my version of that pumpkin brad - i will do my review tomorrow after it cooled down and i had a slice.

    Ja,Deutsche Dame (Germanlady) es ist so schön,daß Sie sich wieder gemeldet haben=it is so nice,that you came back. You are right,Twinkle did lots of work.I even can not imagine that I would been able to do it. Yes,there are many new people here,what it is great. I never ask you,where did you learn your German? -------------DANKE, Renate! To be honest, selbst erlernt! It seems to take forever that way but I never learned German growing up. It was never taught to me. A few words here and there but nothing in conversations. I have had a great passion to learn the language for years. After I met a sweet German lady back in the late eighties and listened to her speak, I wanted to learn very much. We became such good friends and when she planned a trip to go to Germany to see her Mutti, she asked me to go with her. It was a dream come true. It was not to be for she received a call that her Mutti had become ill and my friend would have to stay with her for an extended period of time. I could not think of going. It was a great disappointment for all the plans and paper work was all set for us to go. She went alone and on her return, I found that she had purchased a German doll for me. I had given her some spending money for herself and she shared some of it with me. I still have that doll and always think about the giver. Missing the trip was a great disappointment but it was not to be at that time. Since that time I have met several German friends through email and I am grateful for them. If you could see how many books I have and how many German programs I purchased because of my great passion for the language, you would laugh at me and think I should be a pro at it. NOT SO!!! When you do not write and speak the language, it is easy to lose what you have learned. I was given Amazon gift certificates for my birthday and so I purchased a German/English parallel Bibel. There are programs on the internet where I can hear the spoken German and follow along. It is a great way to learn. Like I say.....it is a passion of mine. I am able to read it far better than write it. I am not great at writing English so I am not surprised that German does not come easy. There, Renate! How was that for a long answer to a short question, LOL! --------------Thanks for the hugs, Heidi. They are needed! I am waiting on the test results this week and of course it is a little nerve racking. I am doing okay. ---------------Thanks for the nice chat, Twinkle..as always, I enjoy your chats. One of the ladies mentioned that she likes to see the German so here are a few words..... Freut mich = Pleased to meet you ...Schoenen Tag noch = Have a nice day!     Dear Germanlady

    its very difficult to learn a language by oneself and especially the pronounciation and sound of the language... so good for you to use all this material to move on... I think it doesn't matter how old you are, how talented or how fast - to make an effort and being interested and to try to maser any language whatsoever is of high benefit of oneself. It opens minds and makes people communicate easier across the world... My moms friend started learning french and spanisch at the community college just for travelling and to be occupied when the empty nest syndrom kicked in and she felt like doing something... enjoy your emial friendships and keep comming here and practice a bit if you like!!

    Today is a typical monday.. better get back to work -lol

    Yes learning a second language is very difficult and I admire anyone who can speak more than one language. 

     

    Somehow the piles seem to build up here too.  Oh I have names for them too but nothing I can say on here haha.  Now that there is just the three of us the junk seems to pile up on the kitchen table since we just need one end to sit at.  It is easier to move it all to one side than deal with it right away.  That is something I am always trying to do is keep the table cleared...

     

    Yesterday I cooked up my pumpkin and processed it all and got my recipe planned.  Today I will bake it and see how it goes....

     

    We got snow on Halloween night.  All the kids were out trick or treating in that.   Brrr I am so glad that I didn't have anyone that needed me to take them around. 

     

    I did some searching and came up with a few old Christmas corners.  I hope the links work but otherwise you will just have to copy and paste the link to your browser...

    Germanlady=Deutsche Dame, you are right,that was a long story for a short question,but I enjoyed reading it.I am only sorry,that you did not get to travel to Germany. I had also a little bit a similar experience in 04, when my DD and I had tickets to fly to Germany for a months vacation.My DD was out of work and we wanted to surprise my fathers brother for his 90, birthday. One week before our flight, I got the notice,that my sister had suddenly had past away.She was supposed to travel with us.,to see all our relatives. So we had to clean out her apartment .There were not any relatives in Mainz,who could have done it.Her only son had passed away 2 years earlier. We only got to do a fast visit and see a few relatives at the end and my DD missed going to Paris,to meet her DH there.============================================================================ Berny,I know,that you are the one,who could help us.You are the German Corner keeper.     Hope that snow stops for a bit... here is teh recipe i promised you

    Title: Pickled Pumpkin

    Ingredients:

          2 lb Pumpkin
        1/3 c  Sugar
        1/2    Cinnamon stick or 1/4
               Teaspoon
               Ground cinnamon
          3    Whole cloves
        1/2 ts Ground nutmeg
          1 ts Whole coriander
        1/2 ts Salt
          1 c  Water
          1 c  White wine vinegar
               Yield: Makes about 1 quart.


      Author's Notes: These pumpkin pickles are a great condiment to have around
      the kitchen, and they keep refrigerated for up to a year. Even though
      they're spiced with cloves and cinnamon, they don't taste at all like
      pumpkin pie filling because they're both sweet and sour. It's really a
      relish, and people are always surprised when I tell them it's pumpkin. Pair
      Pickled Pumpkin with hot Indian-style curries.
     
      Peel and discard outer skin of pumpkin with vegetable peeler or paring
      knife. Cut flesh into 1" cubes and set aside.
     
      Combine sugar, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, coriander, salt, water and vinegar
      in 1 quart pan. Place over high heat and bring to boil. Add pumpkin cubes
      and return to boil. Cook 1 minute.
     
      Remove pan from heat and pour contents into container. Allow to cool.
       Cover and refrigerate 1 week before using.

    Hello friends, I am here just a minute to say "hallo" and read a bit before finding something to eat. Thanks for all your kindness. It warms the heart. Berny, (I hope I have that correct) are you the one who found the Frohe Weihnachten post of 2004?Anyway, I clicked on the link and missed my lunch, LOL! I had so much fun reading through most all of the postings. It brought back good memories. Thank you for taking the time to find these earlier German Corner posts. I have some good memories from those days on the board. I wish I could do more of it but the eyes get tired these days. I need new "specks." Thanks for all the hard work. I am not able to look at all of them now but I will keep the links in a "safe place" so I can find them again. I hope you all are having a good day. Hugs to you.....Germanlady

    You are all welcome very much!  I also spent a good portion of my day going through those old Christmas posts and copying and pasting to an email so I can find them when I need them. 

     

    Germanlady I am so glad that your tests came back with good results!  I too have learned the power of prayer in the last year as I have had many people praying for me.

    I did not have time to look at the Christmas links Berny posted.After I came back from the chiropractor,we had some company and later I looked at some e-mail and vidios my DD send me.They live across from the Yale bowl.Two houses down from them there was an electrical fire outside the house ,where the wires were connected to the house and had become loose.The fire department was called and they entered the house and they found no furniture on the first floor,but an sophisticated Marijuana growing garden.The street value of the plants is $ 2.4 million . How strange,that they had to steal electricity and were to poor to pay for it. The people in the neighborhood can not believe,who lived next to them and the did not know about it.==================================================================================Germanlady,good, that your tests turned out OK. I am waiting for one myself and of course I am nervous about the results.======================================================= Berny,we talked about languages. Do you speak English or French? I thought English and did you have French in school? We started with English, when we were 10 years old and most students learn French two years later,but I had Russian. I had the choice between French or Russian and I selected Russian,since we,in Berlin,were surrounded by Russian occupation abd I thought it would be good to speak the language.================================================== Where is this Shannon lady???     Twinkle,I love marinated pumpkin,but I did not have it for years. I could not peel the pumpkins,the peel was to hard. But I have to see,if I still find one.I have to have it. My aunt in East-Berlin had a ready mix to make it and it was great. We always had it in summer. I don't like it,that here you can not buy pumpkins after Halloween .I also like to make stew in a pumpkin.One year I entered stew in a pumpkin in the cook-off and I had to make sure I had some extra ones,since the cook-off was after Halloween.     Boiling the potatoes and chilling them overnight makes them easy to cut and sauté. Leftover potatoes and brisket would make a great breakfast hash.

    Ingredients

    • 4 pounds unpeeled medium-size red-skinned potatoes
    • 4 1/2 tablespoons olive oil
    • 3 tablespoons malt vinegar or white wine vinegar
    • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
    • 6 tablespoons lard, rendered bacon fat, or olive oil, divided
    • Coarse kosher salt
    • 6 tablespoons lager beer, divided
    • 2 1/2 cups finely chopped red onions, divided
    • 1/3 cup chopped fresh chives or green onions (green parts only)

    Preparation

    Cook potatoes in large pot of boiling salted water until just tender when pierced with sharp knife, about 25 minutes. Drain. Refrigerate potatoes overnight.

    Cut potatoes into 1/2-inch cubes (do not peel). Whisk oil, vinegar, and mustard in small bowl to blend for vinaigrette. Heat 3 tablespoons lard in each of 2 large nonstick skillets over medium-high heat. Add half of potatoes to each skillet; sprinkle with coarse salt. Sauté until potatoes begin to brown, stirring frequently, about 7 minutes. Add 3 tablespoons beer, then 1 1/4 cups red onions to potatoes in each skillet; cook until beer evaporates, stirring occasionally, about 1 minute. Reduce heat to medium and sauté until potatoes are brown around edges, about 5 minutes. Pour half of vinaigrette over potatoes in each skillet and toss to coat. Remove from heat. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Transfer all potatoes to large bowl. Sprinkle with chives.
