    H L Topic of Week Nov. 1-7 ~ Foods That Boost Brainpower!~

    Foods That Boost Brainpower~

Eat these for a sharp, young, and healthy mind~

Can your diet make you smarter? You bet. Research shows that what you eat is one of the most powerful influences on everyday brain skills, plus it may stave off Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia, says Cynthia Green, PhD, founder and director of the Memory Enhancement Program at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City and author of Prevention’s new Brainpower Game Plan book.

The program is based in part on rounding out your meals with key nutrients that (along with exercise and daily brain games) keep brain cells healthy and prevent brain-damaging inflammation.

"Your memory, attention span, and ability to learn will benefit from the healthful foods you’ll be choosing," says Green.

See the top foods and beverages that can make you smarter.

    Fatty Fish

Seafood like salmon, albacore tuna, mackerel, and sardines are packed with omega-3 fatty acids, powerful and versatile nutrients that are essential for a healthy mind. About 40% of the fatty acids in brain cell membranes are DHA, one of the main omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil. Experts believe it’s probably necessary for transmitting signals between brain cells.

In a 2006 study, researchers at Tufts University found that people who ate fish 3 times a week and had the highest levels of DHA in their blood slashed their risk of Alzheimer’s disease by 39%.

Eat it: At least twice a week (limit albacore tuna to no more than 6 ounces a week to minimize mercury exposure).

    Leafy Green and Cruciferous Veggies

Pile salads, stir-fries, and side dishes with broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, kale, bok choy, and brussels sprouts. They’re filled with antioxidants like vitamin C and plant compounds called carotenoids, which are particularly powerful brain protectors.

Antioxidants prevent damage from free radicals, which are waste products your body makes when cells use fuel to create energy. Your brain is especially vulnerable to damage from free radicals because it uses a lot of fuel (it’s only about 3% of your body weight but uses up to 17% of your energy). Since your mind makes a lot of these toxic by-products, ample antioxidants help to disarm and defuse them.

While all antioxidants (from a variety of plants) are good for your brain, these cruciferous veggies are especially effective. A Harvard Medical School study of more than 13,000 women found that those who ate the most lowered their brain age by 1 to 2 years.

Eat it: Daily, as part of a well-rounded mix of other colorful veggies.

    Avocado, Oils, Nuts, and Seeds

They all contain another important antioxidant: vitamin E. In one study, researchers found that people who consumed moderate amounts vitamin E—from food, not supplements—lowered their risk of AD by 67%.

Eat it: Frequently; shoot for 15 mg of E a day, the equivalent of 2 ounces of almonds.

    Chocolate

Sweeten your brain-boosting diet with the dark kind (at least 70% cocoa); it contains flavonoids, another class of antioxidants that some research links to brain health. Other flavonoid-rich foods include apples, red and purple grapes, red wine, onions, tea, and beer.

Eat it: Frequently, as part of a healthy total calorie intake. Up to half an ounce daily has also been shown to lower blood pressure.

    Curry

Go for Thai or Indian takeout; these cuisines often use the potent spice known to fight inflammation. Animal studies have shown that curry’s active ingredient, curcumin, actually clears away Alzheimer’s-causing proteins in the brain called amyloid plaques (though more research is needed in humans).

Eat it: As an ingredient in pasta sauces, salad dressings, or meat marinades.

    Berries

Research indicates these antioxidant powerhouses may protect your brain, although the mechanism isn’t fully understood. Some scientists think they help to build healthy connections between brain cells.

Eat them: Daily, added to yogurt, oatmeal, or cereal for breakfast or an afternoon snack.

    Whole grains

Fiber-rich oatmeal, oat bran, brown rice, and so on help stabilize blood glucose (sugar) levels, compared with refined carbs like white bread and sugary foods. Your body digests these simple sugars quickly, so you have a sudden energy spike—and subsequent plummet.

Since glucose is the brain’s main source of fuel, it’s important to keep levels steady; during a crash, you’ll feel tired and crabby and have trouble concentrating.

Eat them: Daily, aiming for 25 grams of fiber; fruits, vegetables, and beans are other good sources.

    Water (who would have thunk?LOL)

Every cell in your body needs water to thrive, and your brain cells are no exception; in fact, about three-quarters of your brain is water. A small Ohio University study found that people whose bodies were well hydrated scored significantly better on tests of brainpower, compared with those who weren’t drinking enough.

Drink it: Throughout the day; aim to sip 6 to 8 glasses total.

    Alcohol (in moderation)

While chronic, heavy drinking can cause serious dementia, research shows that imbibing lightly may protect the brain. In one JAMA study, people who had one to six drinks a week were 54% less likely to develop dementia than teetotalers. Experts aren’t sure why, but some doctors point out that moderate drinkers have reduced rates of heart disease too. Small amounts of alcohol may protect both the heart and brain by preventing blockages in blood vessels.

Drink it: Once a day or less—and have no more than one drink. If you have a family history of breast cancer, talk to your doctor.

    Coffee

Caffeine is another substance wherein the dose makes the poison: In excess, it can cause brain fog, but in moderate amounts, caffeine can improve attention span, reaction time, and other brain skills. A 2007 French study found that women over 65 who drank three or more cups of coffee a day were better able to recall words than women who consumed little or none. Another review showed that coffee drinkers may cut AD risk by up to 30%.

Drink it: Daily, limiting caffeine intake to 300 to 400 mg; an 8-ounce cup of coffee has around 100 mg.

    Happy Sunday Healthy Ones!

OK, what did you do with your extra hour this morning- for the ones this applies to. LOL I ended up getting up early and had a cup of coffee.  We had nary a ghost or goblin last night! :)

Ok chatty ladies! I thought I was doing good yesterday by doing the 100'th post on last weeks thread and come back this morning and there is 112 replies. Yes   I love it!

This weeks topic goes right along with Kris's tips for brainpower - thought we could also concentrate on the natural approach to the motto- "You are what you eat"..... :) I do most of these but hardly ever have curry.  How about you? I love it.... another plug for water!

Debi, I couldn't find anything fun to watch on tv last night. I did some crocheting and almost finished a hat- a buff colored one that one of the CNAs hinted for at the NH. She is a sweet girl and wants a Miss Nancy hat- but I am going to make the brim more user friendly for her. I think she wants it to match a jacket she wears with her uniform that is a khaki color and it should match perfectly. Can't wait to see her face when I give it to her this week. :)

Kris, wow, those are really good games. You are so creative!

Natasha and Rebecca, lol on typing at the same time! You both crack me up!!! :)  I have had the pretzel jello dessert before and it is really good! Sounds like a neat dessert to make for a different taste Natasha- certainly not your typical T'Giving fare. I always do the sweet potato casserole and some type of other dessert depending on what DH wants for his B'day dessert- his B'day is always so close to T'Giving- the 24'th-this time it is earlier. :) I think he wants a German Chocolate Cake this year- and I am excited about trying a brand new from scratch recipe!

Ok, off to have B'fast, shower and get ready for church! Have a lovely morning- I will be back later on to see who had too much candy last night! Fess up! LOL I had one small almond joy so did ok with that! :)

Re: H L Topic of Week Nov. 1-7 ~ Foods That Boost Brainpower!~

    Good morning.

I eat most of the foods on this list, except curry, just don't  like it. I eat some nuts every day, brazil, almonds and walnuts and chocolate, dark, not a problem except I want to eat more. I very seldom have alcohol,  what I would want wouldn't be healthy.

Natasha I have had the strawberry thing, good. I use to make it to take to the meetings we had with the deaf people. There was one deaf man that has soon as he saw it he would say "mine". He loved it. The receipe I made didn't have pineapple and the sugar used with the cream cheese layer was powdered. One of my BIL' ate it and liked it, then when he found out ithad pretzels said but I don't like pretzel's. LOL He still ate it, but he would not have tried it if he had known.

I slept until 6;30 this morning, by body time, not the clock time. Takes a while to adjust to the change.

Hi to everyone and have a great Sunday.

What a wonderful topic Muril, thank you!

Muril, Good job on sticking to one piece of candy last night! So sweet of you to make a hat for the lady at Miss Nancys home. You are such a sweetheart.

Dusta, LOL at our BIL not liking pretzels but liking the dish. Sean is like that. I just dont tell him whats in things. He has his mind made up on what he does and doesnt like before hes ever tried it. I like some types of curry... I like it as a light flavor, not so overpowering how it can often be. I really enjoy my recipe for Orange Curried Chicken. Its just got a touch of curry but mostly the orange plays well with it so you cant even tell its really a curry. Its delish. When youre feeling adventurous, maybe you can try it :)

With my extra hour, I woke up on my own at 630 new time (730 body time) so I did sleep in an extra 45 minutes I suppose. Got ready, made some breakfast, and now Im just typiing to yall and watching "The Santa Clause" This is one of my fav christmas movies, and Im now really in the mood for Christmas. ITS NOVEMBER!

Been searching through my "Southern Living Christmas Cookbooks" to find some cold weather menus for the next upcoming weeks.

I eat most of the things on that list... big salmon lovers here, being in the Pac NW. We always have fresh salmon readily available, along with tuna, etc. However, I hate dark chocolate... so dont eat any of that. Get plenty of milk chocolate though! Hahaha. Oh, and I dont drink. Well... I have maybe 2 drinks a year, and even then its usually only when we go out for mexican food. I did my drinking when I lived with a buncha college guys in NC :P

Thats strawberry dessert is definitely on my menu for Tday now. You all have such decent reviews for the type of recipe it is. I hope it turns out perfect :)

Im off to search the web, but will be around if anyone else pops in!

    Have a wonderful Sunday ladies!

Re: H L Topic of Week Nov. 1-7 ~ Foods That Boost Brainpower!~

Bah Im bored! Where is everyone... sleeping in? Wake up! hehehe

Okay, Ive got myself ALL excited because I planned my menu down to the T for Thanksgiving day, and even got my grocery list made, all my recipes written down, and making my game plan on how the day will go, what time Ill need to wake up... all that stuff! Im so terribly excited I almost cant contain myself. So... I think Ill share my menu.

Good Eats Brined and Roasted Turkey
Potatoes Au Gratin (from Inn on the Creek) theyre fab!
Crock Pot Stuffing (thanks to Rebecca)
Home made turkey gravy (I make such yummy gravy)
Green beans with bacon and onion
Home made rolls with honey butter
Cranberry Orange Pineapple Sauce (found on TOH)
Sweet Potatoes with Pretzel Cranberry topping (found on TOH)
    strawberry Pretzel salad (Paula Deen)

So... the * I must add the slap chop annoying guy is on TV and he makes me wanna break my tv)... Anyway... The Cranberry sauce is a can of whole berry cranberry sauce, a can of mandarin oranges, and a can of crushed pineapples. I think it sounds wonderful and simple. The sweet potatoes are one I found this year in a TOH that look yummy. They are blendede canned sweet potatoes with sugar, etc... then topped with crushed pretzels, pecans and fresh cranberries and baked. I think theyll be yummy too!

So excited to try some new recipes this Thanksgiving. Usually I do all premade stuff... stove top stuffing, instant mashed potatoes, canned cranberry jellied sauce... things like that. I always make turkey and home made gravy though... so very glad to be doing something more special this year here at home.

Someone wake up and talk to me because I go crazy with menu stuff!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: H L Topic of Week Nov. 1-7 ~ Foods That Boost Brainpower!~

Hi Natasha. It is sort of lonely around here today, but Sunday's are usually slow.

One of the things we have Thanksgiving/Christmas/Easter any get together, mac and cheese, the children will always eat it and sometime there are things they won't. When they are 2/3 that is all they eat.

Brushed Lulu then washed her face and ears. She thought she was going to the groomer and got in Mel's lap so she thought I couldn't get her. The early morning brushing messes with her brain.

Rode the bike 1 1/2 hours so I feel good. Didn't wear as many clothes today, but after one time around had to pull on jacket. It is a beautiful day. Yea! Big Smile

Going to have some more coffee so I won't eat, have the want to eat something today. I had a serving of oatmeal, 1/2 banana and 1 egg white for breakfast then an apple when I got back from riding the bike. I think I have had 3 cups of coffee, only one with caff.

Any of you watch The Doctor's? Friday Dr Phil, wife Dil, son  her sisters and their husbands were on there. The sisters, triplets are all pregnant, the first two are going to have girls, but they didn't know what Dr P dil is going to have, girl. But the reason I was asking this, Robin said she was going to have the baby  call her Blossom, thought it was strange. People name cows Blossom. I called myself Grandmother to my first grand to see what he would make out of it. Mom Mom is what he gave me.

    Later.

Dusta, I know... Sundays are quiet in here.

Glad you got a bike ride in... I wish I had somewhere I could ride to... Living right in the middle of the city kinda sucks. I wanna ride to a park, etc.... not having to stop every block for a light ya know?

What macaroni recipe do you use? Im kinda picky about mac and cheese. My fav is the blue box kind. I only make half the noodles, but still use the same amount of butter and cheese powder stuff. I like the flavor of that powdered stuff. LOL. Im easy to please I guess. Ive never had macaroni for a holiday, good idea though for little ones... wish I had some little ones around, but no kids in the family anymore. Not at least until I or my brothers have one (and I better be first since my brothers are still in their teens!) Haha.

Ive never had decaf coffee... does it taste different? I enjoy coffee so much, would like to drink in the evening or something ya know? But cant have caffeine so late. maybe Ill try some decaf someday for afternoons and evenings.

LOL about Lulu. She assumed he would protect her from you huh?

Getting ready to head to work in about 20 minutes now. What a long morning...  working an extra hour or so today for a Sunday, so will get off at about 330 or so, depending on how much I can find to do to work late. I could use the hours.

Re: H L Topic of Week Nov. 1-7 ~ Foods That Boost Brainpower!~

    Hi Ladies!

I am back from church- nice service- today's serman was on how we are constantly changing to be like God wants us to be - it's an ongoing project and not instant. :)

Natasha, I used to make the boxed macs when the boys were young and then graduated to a baked mac-n-cheese from scratch- now we can't go back. LOL   I am sure the strawberry dessert will come out perfect for you! Re: being in the C'mas spirit! I am getting like that too. I am disappointed in myself though- I had planned on having the main gift for the boys and the girls early this year and haven't thought of what the perfect one would be yet. :(  Your T'Giving meal looks wonderful! If I wasn't planning on going to Mom's, I may just have to come to your house! Wink       BTW, I have been thinking about your dream(nightmare actually) and next time(hope there isn't one but if there is)...try to tell youself that you are dreaming and see what happens. I think if you decide to do this- that you can subconsciously- you never can tell. It may just take care of the problem-put you in control.

Dusta, good for you getting in that bike ride. I should have done some type of exercise today but didn't. Do you bake your mac-n-cheese? We have had it as a maincourse before. Our boys think it is a big deal when we have it! Sounds like you are getting some nice mild weather.  It is 54 degrees here today. After church, we went by Kroger to buy the small candy bars after they went on sale...DH's idea, not mine. Angel  Anyway, coming out of the store- the air felt like snow- you know that cold but not too cold feeling. Eeek, hope not. Don't think it is cold enough to snow but sure felt that way. I really don't want it to snow until after T'Giving- otherwise Mom's place looks like the North Pole and some places the sun doesn't shine on.... :)

Although there is small snickers, milky ways, twix, muskateers, and almond joys in the house- I only had one little almond joy after lunch.... I started to get a twix and thought- NO! I don't need another candy bar just because it is here. I told DH we need to freeze a bunch of them to keep from eating them too fast.  :)   Pray for me! :)

Off to call Mom and see what is up with her. Hugs to All!

    Hi Natasha, Dusta, & Muril!

I would have responded sooner, but my DF has me typing a legal document for him.  I'm on my second correction so I'm getting close to finishing!  LOL!  It usually takes three times: compose, black & white, 2nd correction, then the final touches.  I put in apostrophes that he didn't like and some rewording needs to be done.

I LOVE Jean Bice with the Quacker Factory on QVC!  I never have bought her clothing, but think it looks cute!  My DSis thinks I've lost my mind when I'm mesmorized by her items.

Natasha I have a Mac & Cheese soufle that I will try and post by the end of the day.  It definately doesn't taste like the powder, but it's tradition with our family.

Dusta - Great job on your bike ride!  1 1/2 hours if fabulous!  It is beautiful today!  I'd like to open some windows and doors, but do to DF's allergies I'll just have to make time to head outside.

Muril - Thanks for the reminder of H2O!  LOL!  I get my 6 8oz glasses in, but I've also added an extra can of Diet Coke.  I know they say it makes you crave more sugar & I can tell a difference.  I need to cut back.

Yesterday in the LOVELY upper 60's I washed my car, did my studying on the back porch with my cat Cherokee, mowed the lawn, and cut back flowers.  Today I studied on the back porch, and now I'm finishing the legal documents and making my Reeces's Pieces cookies.  I'm sending a LOVE box to my niece and nephew in college as they get ready for the tests and papers due before Thanksgiving.

    I'll check back later!

Hi Kris! When we used to get the paper- my favorite was Blonde and Dagwood! :)  Hmmm, would like a Dagwood sandwich right now! Now look what you have started..... LOL  Wish it warm enough here to open the windows. Boo Hoo- been dreary and damp today. It was raining when we went to church but had stopped before church was over.

Couldn't get Mom on the telly- wonder where she went?

Kris I lilke Zits, Pickles, Lockhorns(the couple) and Garfield, love it when the dog gets the best of him.

No I don't bake the macncheese, lazy just cook the  pasta add some milk and cheese cook a little more and say it is ready. DM baked her's, but did I mention I am lazy? I don't want another something to wash. Don't use the box product either, for every 1/2 cup pasta I use I put in 3 pieces of cheese then add an extra piece.

Natasha I love coffee too, but the caf gives me the shakes if I get too much. And I don't think it taste as good as regular, I have to use a lot more of it to get it to taste better.  I had to try different brands until I fould one I liked, well sort of liked. I drink coffee in the afternoon to keep from eating.

Re: H L Topic of Week Nov. 1-7 ~ Foods That Boost Brainpower!~

     Good Sunday evening everyone - - -
I just got back from going the Church at the Health Center that My mom and cousin live at.  It was a nice little service.
My cousin was really gettin' into the Hymns LOL  He's a hoot.

We didn't have any Halloween candy here - so I didn't do anything "bad"    The carrot cake is pretty darn good, but we're working on it slowly.  :)

Muril - thanks for the Brain Food article - - - I actually do eat all of those - - - - with the exception of having an alcoholic beverage daily - - - - but maybe I'll just start it up.
I like to sip on some wine while cooking dinner - - - maybe I'll make it a habit.
I see how you slipped that 'water thing' in there - - - sneaky girl. ...... ......
My family love the German Chocolate Cake from Scratch - - - that's usually how we make it.  The icing is SO GOOD.  Better than the canned kind.
It's usually what my Mom requests - if she wants a cake.

I will pray for you - and your Candy Bar delimma - - - but I gotta tell ya, if we froze them - all the better in my mind LOL  I would eat even more of them.......Stick out tongue

Natasha - that Jello Pretzel dessert sounds really good - - - we make a jello layered dessert that's similar - but I think I'm going to try yours sometime during the holidays this year.  My sister and Mom will love it.  As will I.  :)
About Decaf coffee - - - I can't tell the differance.  But I usually drink caffienated coffee  - - - just don't drink it later in the day.
I can usually drink some around 3:00 and do alright - - - but after that and I'm wired for the night.  I love coffee.

    Hi Dusta -
LOL about LuLu and the brushing.  She's so funny.  I had seen a Dr. Phil show earlier in the year - where they all wanted to get pregnant - or maybe they were - - - - but no, I didn't know Robin wanted to be called "Blossom"  that is sort of very different????????
Ya Never know what the grands will end up calling you I guess.
Have a friend who decided he wanted his little grandson to call him Grandfather - with a very distinguished tone - - - - -
Well the little boy ended up calling the friends wife Gran and called him Faddy   hahahaha
I guess that's how the little boy heard 'grandfather'   it was really funny.  But it stuck and now it's just who they are.  LOL

Hi KRIS - I used to send LOVE boxes to my ds when he was having finals in college.  That is always so much fun.  Yum on those cookies too.
I ususally like Garfield - or Family Circus in the Comic section of the Sunday paper

    O.K. - I don't have a Mac n Cheese recipe that I have ever made - - - - maybe I should get one of yours - - - -
What kind of cheeses do  you all use?
My sweet sweet MIL used to make some that was really good - - - -sadly, the recipe went with her though.  Now, there's someone I miss a lot of times.

well, think I'll go take a bath and relax - - - not that I've been doing anything to make me need to relax.
    I've had sort of a Stomach Virus today - - -yuck - - - - -so have been drinking a lot of coke/rootbeer etc......Embarrassed
Seems to be the only thing I want.
    Maybe tomorrow will be better......
    talk to ya then,

    Debi

Dusta, have you tried the Taster's Choice Decaf- not bad for a decaf- maybe because it is freeze-dried-for an instant coffee that is. The Health Food store has a organic brand decaf I have been meaning to try but it is really expensive. :)

Mom finally called me back-seems she was watching one of her favorite preachers on tv(Walter Pearson) when I called and ignored the phone when it rang. He has a really simple down to earth style of explaining things and is humerous too.  Mom is doing well....
