Denise,
I'm so sorry for what you are going through. 2 years ago I almost lost my Mom because she was stubborn. In the middle of her hospital room, I lost it and yelled at her. She needed a temp feeding tube because she could not get food down due to an esophageal condition. I knew she could be "fixed" and wasn't giving up. (I've already lost my Dad and wasn't letting her give up.) The patient and visitor in the other bed were amazed I spoke to my Mom that way but they agreed she needed to hear it. She was malnourished due to her condition, which they treated but would not do agressive PT in the hospital. They wanted her moved to rehab. She couldn't even stand up by herself. She almost fell off the bed, with 3 nurses around her, at discharge! I was furious but they needed the bed. Lovely health care we have! She went to rehab and they worked with her but not aggressively either. Medicare only lets you stay there so long. So I sat down with the director and PT staff and said...she is not coming home until she can do these things...and I gave them a list of about 10 things, like step up a curb, endurance to stand to wash dishes, cook, iron and do laundry. I asked why she had been there 2 1/2 weeks and was still in a wheelchair and told them my house is not wheelchair friendly. Well, that woke them up, the next day she was walking with a walker. Now, 2+ years later she is doing everything she was before she got sick except driving. She's 78. Still stubborn but still here. My BIG lesson is you have to be persistent, you have to be an adovocate, if you don't get results, go higher. I believe all her troubles started with the drug Vytorin that I did not want her on in the first place. Needlessto say we are not longer with that doctor. We were told she would have this esophageal thing again, maybe 2 months, maybe 2 years but nothing, knock wood! Again, I think it was related to the Vytorin which can cause a side effect of weak muscles. I'l pray for your family. I know it's a very stressful time. That was some of the worst 3 months of my life.
We do have cooler air now, but a tropical storm may be on it's way. They predict the path to come very close to us by Thurs/Fri. May just be a big rainmaker, which we need. The water isn't warm enough for hurricane development, but stranger things have happened!
Today is busy...DH's campaign fundraiser tonight, b-day party to take DS2 to this afternoon plus some laundry and ironing. Not enough hours in the day and by 8:30 I'm wiped!
Hope everyone has a nice weekend!
Ellen
