    Canadian Corner 11/04/09

    Good Morning Friends,

We are in for some nice temps by the weekend up to 16C but for now we are expecting rain.

Later this morning I'm going to a funeral for one of my clients who passed away last Saturday, she was a kind warm hearted lady. Her house was always spotless, had to look hard for the dust. She will be missed very much by her family friends and church.

André feeling better he is making his own breakfast, and feeling a little frisky if you know what I mean. That is a no no for now.

Where can I find diet for low sodium, low cholesterol, high fibre, diabetic diet?  I really don't know what to buy, I do know we need to eat more fish/chicken but what kind of sandwich meats ? I know cold cuts have lots of sodium.

Aleida, what a busy lady you are with all the stitching making stockings for everyone.  A long list on the to do list.

Grammapeach, are you working today?  I'm going back next week.

Char, what type of work will Dan find during the winter months?  How are the kids? Is Kaeli feeling better?  I love kids as long as they are not mouthy.

Dolores, I don't think I could keep up with you,  the same goes for Pat. As far as I am concern the CC is a busy place with all the ladies trying to keep their heads above water.

Marilyn, how is everyone in your family?  I bet the Munchkins love coiming to visit gramma. How are the little dogs?

    Have a nice day all,

    YF

Maria, you can Google low fat/sodium/cholesterol diets. Or ask the doctor's office if they have a list of foods that are good (or bad!). Stay away from any kind of processed meat. You can buy EggBeaters that can be scrambled for breakfast or used in baking. There are other brands of egg substitute, but I can't think of them right now. You will usually find those in or near the dairy case. Skim or 1% milk. After a while, you'll get so good at recognizing what he can and can't eat that it will be just second nature...and the benefit to you is that you'll be eating a healthy diet, too. Lots of fruits and vegetables. When we have canned veggies, I always rinse them first, and that helps to lower the sodium content. It's hard to think of the "right" things off the top of my head because it's what I've been doing for years. You'll get used to reading labels, that's for sureSmile Even if a label says "no transfat", if the word "hydrogenated" appears anywhere on the list of ingredients, it's a no-no.

I'm off to work this morning. Gotta get a wiggle on. BBL

    LOL  André, you tiger you!!

Hi Maria -- that's some diet there you have to do.  I'm not that good at being very strict about diets.  And I think it's important to think that we can't cut it out completely but we can cut back.  I cannot have much salt -- or I have vertigo attacks -- they are awful so I can be pretty good about it.  We rarely sprinkle salt on our food -- at a restaurant I shudder when I see how much some people add before even tasting the food -- but I do need a little on french fries and pasta -- but don't have that all that often.  I do like pepper and I like some heat in my food -- so I'm mostly okay as is David.  Because I have it so rarely I begin to crave it.  If I have a potato chip, I keep it in my mouth and suck the salt right off it -- awful image I am sure but that's Aleida's life haha.  David needs to cut back on cholesterol -- and really I do too.  So I will get better at it -- for instance the soup yesterday called for whipping cream, I used half-and-half.  But I won't cut it out completely because I do enjoy my food.  There are some pills you can get at a health food store that I am going to see about for cholesterol -- and I should ask my DSIL about them -- she's a pharmacist -- but if they help well I may just add them to the other pills/vities I take.

Lotte, that stocking is a pattern out of a book -- a book with several Christmas stockings.  I do like kits and have several -- they are easy gifts for people to give to me -- but I also have several pattern books.  I like both equally well.  I have lots of thread waiting to be used -- sometimes find many skeins (unused) for a terrific price at garage sales.  The towel I intend to do next -- hope to start today is also from a book -- the Christmas cards are small kits -- which I can't seem to find around here -- all the ones I have or have done are garage sales -- but I think the UK sells them a lot and I may have to order via the internet.

David is off to work.  He came home yesterday.  He got two deer and if the other guys are still at the camp on Friday he will return there then.  Shortly after that, I guess all the hunting gear can be put away -- hopefully all in one spot so we're not looking for stuff the next hunting season.  He just laid all his stuff in the front room -- entryway room -- and my house still looks fairly uncluttered -- well as uncluttered as I get it -- I am a collector unfortunately and that's not going to change anytime soon -- but if you were to visit me -- we could chat, have a coffee/tea and browse my too many cookbooks.  Ahhh what fun -- we could pick a dessert for my next turn at puzzles/soup/dessert -- I will post my dessert from yesterday on the recipe thread because it was good.  Or we could decide what I can make for the ladies' Christmas potluck -- yup, I need those cookbooks.  I know the internet is good -- but if I'm on here all the time I'll become the hunchback of Washago and my chiropracter can keep a practice with a patient of one -- that being me -- oh alright, I'll let David have a turn also.

Funny story -- my Dsister in Vancouver sent out pics of her two children (4 and almost 2) going to a pumpkin patch to pick out Halloween pumpkins -- on a rainy, wet, muddy day -- they're in boots and rain gear -- she said they would get stuck in the mud -- anyways I digress -- so they are gathering pumpkins and putting the ones they think they might like together -- and then they will make a final selection -- one each.  So they have a few to pick from and are gathering more.  My sister, Lilia says "Noella, you have several here to pick from.  Why do you need more?  What are you looking for"  Her response, "I'm looking for one with a face." laugh, laugh, laugh.

Well if I keep typing no one will read any of this because it too closely resembles a novel.  So I'll be back later with more -- guess I feel chatty today.

Good Morning  YF & All CC Friends to follow

I'm glad that Andre is feeling better just remember to take it easy. If he is feeling frisky he is definetly on the mend.

YF I don't know what to tell you about cold cuts we rarely buy them as they have so much cemicals. I usually cook extra & have that for lunch. I cook alot with a product called NO Salt it's in a white round packadge with red & green lettering.

Aleida good job on the stockings I hope to finish my Angel picture by the end of the month. I spent yesterday ripping out stictches because I used the wrong colour. That puts me behind by two days.

Char hope your DH finds work during the winter being in concrete it's always slower during the winter months.

Grammapeach I can see you are not going to miss the winter in the UP, glad your DGS is OK, that was scary I'm sure

Have to run as there are more appointments today

    Everyone take care

Don't you just hate that?  I remember the first stocking I did that had half stitches -- had never done one with half stitches before -- this one had a lot of them behind Santa -- trees and sky.  I did a fair bit of the sky  -- well way too many of them when it came to removing them -- with the full cross stitch.  I was feeling good about how the stocking was progressing and then realized I had done it all wrong.  I could have left them in, except that they then used from 2 - 5 threads per half stitch to put some dimension to the picture and I decided to remove them and just start all that over.  Of course, then I'm discouraged and I put the project aside and it is some time before I get back to it -- silly me.

I have a container of No Salt also but I rarely use it.  I don't mind cooking without salt and I don't really like the taste of it when you put it on your food just before eating -- and I am getting used to reaching for the pepper -- actually like that -- wonder when they'll tell me why I shouldn't have pepper on my food.  LOL

In the hospital they were giving him Mrs. Dash, it has 14 spices no salt.

I will have to look for some, and get checking the net for the right diets.

I'm going to a Pampered Chef party tonight.  In the past I have been hard pressed to find something I want to buy.  I already have the garlic press and ice cream scoop -- both of which I love.  I also have some stonewear which I rarely use and then some other pieces.  My DSIL has lots of thier stuff and really loves them.  Her timer is done for -- so that is one thing I will be buying.  I think I also like their new cake pans/cookie sheets and will get some for myself and Tiffany.

Do any of you have some favourite pieces -- or for that matter any opinion on PC??

LOL I have a PC spoonula -- gonna start using that word.  I have the large one DSIL put it in my stocking last year.  I don't have the two smaller ones.  Might like the smallest.

    Thanks Ann

    CRAP  --- DOUBLE CRAP

I have always worn turtle necks -- sweaters  and dresses.

I've noticed over the last couple of months that I am finding them uncomfortable around my neck -- enough so that I will probably have to stop wearing them.  Does this mean I'm getting fat there?  Thick neck Aleida???  I like to wear them with the cold, under soemthing else and then I'm usually quite warm.

    Like I said before

    CRAP

Mrs. Dash! I'd forgotten because it's just about all I use. Told you it gets to be second natureSmile There's also a product called Lite Salt that's pretty good, but if you get a lot of potassium from foods, don't use it because otherwise you'll end up with too much potassium. If Andre is a banana lover and eats bananas daily, skip Lite Salt.

I know what you mean about salting food before tasting. It drives me nuts! Not to mention that it's really kind of insulting to the cook to not taste the food first.

Fibre. Lots of fibre, which you get from fruits and vegetables, bran, oats, whole grains (whole grain bread is a good source). If Andre likes oatmeal for breakfast, that's a good thing. I can't stand the stuff (a leftover from childhood), but bran is good, too. I also take fibre capsules daily. Fibre "gathers up" the cholesterol and works that stuff right through the system, and besides that, if you have a problem with constipation at all, fibre will take care of it right quick!

Aleida, about the turtlenecks...I don't know if your neck is gaining weight without the rest of you, but if your turtlenecks are cotton, it could be that they just got shrunk in the dryer. I wear turtlenecks in winter, too, because my hair is very, very short, and my neck gets cold.

Oops...almost forgot about Pampered Chef. I love my pizza stone! And they have big measuring bowls...I have a one quart and a two quart...they come with snap on lids...and are marked for both cups and litres. I like the big two quart one for mixing up cookie dough. I like the smaller one for mixing together things like liquids and cream soups or whatever to add to casseroles. They are really handy. I have two of each and use them all the time. The nice thing about mixing up cookie dough in the big ones is that if you want to mix the dough but won't have time to bake the cookies right away, you can just snap the lid on and put it in the fridge until you're ready.

Thanks Gramma -- I'll be looking at the measuring bowls tonight although I do have a 1-qt and a 2-qt measuring cup (not PC) -- which I don't really use that often   But having lids on the bowls ( and measuring lines) would definitely be a convenience.  I do have a pizza stone -- but not PC.  I don't really like pizza all that much -- but good for once in a while.  Still very interesting to read what the others of you have and use often.

Hi all!!  I is late today and I is tired!!  LOL   I canned my final 9 qts of maters today, reboiled the 7 pints of grape jelly that didn't set when I made them 2 weeks ago.  Cleaned out my fridge and washed the kitchen floor!!

Jonah was home sick from school today, just a bad cold .  But there are tons of kids out both here and at the high school so there may be no school for the next 2 days. But they are going to start giving the kids up to age 14 the shots for H1N1 on Friday. Sounds like we are off to a wonderful start to the winter. SIGH

Not much else new , going to have a early night to bed tonight as I feel like I am getting a sore throat.  Have a good evening everyone.   Dolores
