    Oven temperature.

Can someone tell me which is the hottest part of the oven, the top or the bottom. Some recipes say use the top rack and some say the lower rack. I always thought that the top was the hottest since heat rises to the top but my friend says that the bottom is the hottest since it is closest to the heat. I have an electric oven and the top element heats to pre-heat the oven. Also is it the same for gas oven.

The best way to find out where in YOUR oven is the hottest , Buy your self an oven thermmometer, try it in different parts of the oven, If a recipe calls for middle, top or bottom, thats the best place to bake, I would guess, as ovens vary do your own little test, good luck.

Hi! When baking, I've found that the oven is hottest near the top AND the bottom; if you want the bottom of your food to cook more than the top, put the rack near the bottom; but if the rack is quite high, the top will cook more. Occasionally a recipe will specify that a food is to be cooked near the bottom; if there is no specification, the food should be near the center of the oven to cook evenly. This experience is based on a gas oven.
