Christian or Jewish??

    Christian or Jewish??

    Ok my husband has a niece and her mother is jewish and her father is christian, they are divorced, We are going to her bat mitzvah soon, but,she also celebrates christmas, She likes the part she gets double gifts at Hannakah and also christmas....my question is,,isnt this confusing to grow up with 2 faiths????/ What do you think??

    I would think so since one believes that a Savior has already come and the other doesn't. However, there are many families that do this.

    Maybe when she gets older...but I'm guessing right now she sees it as 2 holidays where she gets gifts!! I know I would if I was that age!

    One of my DD's good friends from high school came from a family where her mother was Jewish, her father was Lutheran. They always celebrated the holidays of both faiths. The girls were very well-rounded, and extremely well-informed and very tolerant.

    Techically, according to the Jewish faith, children are supposed to be the religion of the mother, but I think that sharing both religions with the children is really the right thing to do. That way, when the children are of age, they can make an informed decision for themselves.

    Will if it doesn't confuse the child, I'd think it would be nice to learn about 2 religions/faiths & then choose your own.

    However, this must be a little confusing. You either believe in Christ or you don't. It's not like one is Baptist the other is Protestant...there's the same root belief there.

    Ask you niece sometime if it confuses her. If not, then be happy for her!

    My niece is Lutheran and her husband is Jewish. They don't seem to have any problems with it. The son just had his bar mitzpah and the older daughter now attends her Mom's church. Everyone seems pretty well rounded and nothing is forced on either child.
    I think it is a good thing if you can interweave them and the child can choose which way they wish to go when they are old enough to make that decision.

    DH's cousin was raised Presbyterian. She married a Jew. Their wedding was officiated by a minister and a rabbi. Sort of a "dual" ceremony even complete with the breaking of the glass. But since they've decided to be a "one-religion" family. The couple's two daughters have been raised Jewish participating in Hebrew school and their own bat mitzvahs.

    Well Jesus was Jewish so I have to respect His faith but I am and always will be a Christian because of Him, His Passion, death and Resurrection.

    I think it would be hard to grow up with 2 faiths but eventually one of the faiths will override and be her main one I think.

    I supose it depends on what role religion plays in your life. For my dad, as an example, religion is philosophy: a code of guidelines for living compatably with his fellow humans. As such, he considers it very important, but I'm not certain he believes in God. For a person who views religion as guidelines rather than as law, areas of disagreement provide opportunities for spiritual growth, rather than for confusion.

    Either Jesus is divine in her home or He isn't. It's not like you can say He's Lord every other weekend like a visiting parent...LOL My guess is that they're not very conservative Jews and celebrate Christmas as a secular holiday.

    Perhaps she was raised to believe that Jesus and God are different aspects of the same divine being.
    One God = One God.

    Most Christians do deny being polytheistic.

    BOC, according to my best understand of Jewish belief, Jesus was NOT divine in any form. Someone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong...

    True. We don't have any beliefs about Jesus, and believe the savior has not yet come.
