    Patriotic Cupcakes

DGD (6) and DGS (3 1/2) helped me make a batch of these today. When I made them last year, I found that the gel food colors gave me true red and blue. The liquid colors gave me pink and turquoise. Thought I would rerun the recipe for the new people on the BB.

PS I had to change my screen name by adding a 1 to Jogie. I have struggled lately to sign on with my old name of Jogie.

    PATRIOTIC CUPCAKES
Quick Cooking July Aug. 2005 pg. 26

    Jodi Rugg

    1/2 t. blue food coloring
    1/2 t. red food coloring
1 can (16 oz.) vanilla frosting
    Red, white, and blue sprinkles

Prepare cake batter according to package directions. In a small bowl, combine 1 1/3 c. batter and blue food coloring. In another bowl, combine 1 1/3 c. batter and red food coloring. Leave remaining batter plain.
Fill paper-lined muffin cups with 2 T. red batter, 2 T. plain batter and 2 T. blue batter.
Bake at 350 for 20-24 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean.
Cool for 10 minutes before removing from pans to wire racks to cool completely.
Frost with vanilla frosting; decorate with sprinkles.
    Yield: 1 1/2 dz.

Thanks for the tip about using gel food colors. My youngest was born on 4th of July so I'm always interested in ideas to make the treats extra special.

My son was born in 1987 on 4th of July. His sister was born on Memorial Day 1986, and oldest brother was Thanksgiving 1984 ! guess I got extra excited on the holidays :) Actually, I wouldn't have recommended it back in the 80's... All stores & florists were closed so no flowers or baby gifts, visitors were scarce because of holiday commitments, and nothing to watch on TV in the hospital ! When they were small, I made them each T-shirts that said "Everyone celebrates MY birthday ! Born on (then listed the holiday) & decorated around it with the appropriate theme for each. Oh the memories, as they are now 19, 20 & 21 !!

    Thanks Jodi.
    I just coppied your recipe.
My grandkids will love making these. Maybe red & green for Christmas. Maybe pink for Valentines day. And one grandson will be 8 on St. Patricks day birthday. He can make green ones!
