Rec: Delicious Dessert Bars...I need a name for them. They were sort of made up as I went along...thank goodness they came out great!

I had to make a dessert for a friend's party. I was pondering what to make. I didn't have the eggs to spare or milk or butter, (long story) I didn't want to make a cake cuz there was going to be a grad cake there, so I started building with what ingredients I had on hand and this is what happened...I got SO many compliments on those bars at the party! I love it when things work out! I guess they are a variation of magic bars???

I made the crust I make for my praline bars:

    1/2 Cup veggie oil
    1/2 C. real butter
    1 C. Powder sugar
    2 cups flour

cream oil, butter, and powder sugar. Add flour and mix to fine crumbs. Press in 9x13" baking pan. Bake 350 deg for 13 min. While baking get the other ingredients ready (I found these laying around)

1 bag Nestle white choc chips
1 Cup (approx) DRIED pineapple pieces
1 Cup (approx) chopped nuts of your choice (I happened to use BRAZIL nuts!)
    1 Cup (approx) shredded coconut
    1 can sweetened condensed milk

remove partially baked crust, pour condensed milk until completely covering crust, but not deep. Sprinkle dried pineapple first, spaced around about 1" apart. Then sprinkle the white chips. I didn't need the whole bag, about 3/4 bag worked fine, then I sprinkled the coconut...a nice even covering, then the nuts, then I baked it another 20 min until set. I served in small squares.

I was thinking that next time, I may just use dried cranberries for a slight tartness instead of the pineapple or perhaps mixed with the pineapple.

If anyone makes these, let me know what you think

You know, with the pineapple and coconut an maybe macadamia nuts, you could call them Hawaiian Bars. I'm so glad your experiment worked!

These sound very good. They almost sound like a bar a friend of mine had in Hawaii and has been trying to replicate..without much luck I must say. :) I'm going to give her this recipe and have her try it, using macadamia nuts.

BTW.....would you please post the rest of your recipe for the Praline Bars? TIA!
Also I was wondering why you use oil and butter in your crust instead of all butter.

For a name: Hawaiian Magic Bars

    These new bars sound delicious.

We may have a new Bulletin Board Hit to add to the collection.

I glad your experiment turned out and thank you for sharing it with us.

all your suggestions for names are good, but I'd have to research to be sure the names aren't used yet for a different recipe! Macademia nuts! Wow, that WOULD be very good in this recipe!

Clogging Nana, here is the recipe you asked for. This recipe has been a staple for years...I've made it for countless weddings, special occasions, etc. Highly complimented. I used oil and butter because I didn't have enough real butter, but I think I may do this from now on...it came out great! You can do it with all shortning, but I don't cuz it is hydrogenated

    Praline bars (9x13)

    CRUST:

    1/2 Cup veggie oil
    1/2 C. real butter
    1 C. Powder sugar
    2 cups flour

cream oil, butter, and powder sugar. Add flour and mix to fine crumbs. Press in 9x13" baking pan. Bake 350 deg for 13 min. While baking get the other ingredients ready in a mixing bowl:

    3 lg eggs
1 3/4 cup brown sugar (dark brown even better)
    3 TBS flour
    1 tsp baking powder
    1 tsp salt
    1 tsp vanilla
2 cups chopped nuts (pecans are best, but I've used walnuts, hazelnuts, whatever I have on hand)

Mix all but nuts at once in mixing bowl, then mix in nuts.

Pour over hot partially baked crust, shake a little to get even coverage. put back into oven another 12-15 min or until "set". Let completely cool before trying to cut it. These freeze very well.

If these names are already taken why not combine some of the suggestions to have....tropical Hawaiian bars.

Thanks Bagelbaker for posting the recipe for me. I'm always looking for great bar recipes, and this looks delicious.
I just watched the Barefoot Contessa on the food channel and she made pecan bars and then dipped the ends in chocolate....they looked wonderful.

Another question on your crust just so I understand :)...you use to make it with all butter but now prefer using half oil and half butter? TIA again for the help.
