As for just heating with butter I prefer the kidney beans, also good in bean salad and have used them in chile but prefer chili breans or pinto for the chili. I have never used black beans very much, I need to try them again.

Best and GASLESS beans are Anazasi. Very mild and cook up to taste creamy.
A bit pricey but well worth it. They can be adapted to any recipe (IMO).

    Neither, thank you very much.

Grelo, I don't think I've seen anasazi beans, but I'll have to look harder for them...sounds better than pintos as far as gassiness is concerned.

We like both black and kidney beans at our house.

Kidney beans are great in chili.

I make an outrageously delicious cuban black bean soup (vegetarian) from scratch.

A few years ago I was unexpectly called upon to serve Christmas dinner for ten people -- without any plan or preparation! I made my black bean soup, served it over rice, dished up some tuna fish sandwiches and poured everyone a glass of leftover Thanksgiving wine -- there were no complaints!

Try substituting the white kidney beans, cannellini, for the red ones & see if that is better.

I like them all. I use kidney beans in my chili and cannellini in my white chili.
There is a local German restaurant that makes a delicious black bean soup. I wish they'd give out their recipe; I haven't found anything that compares yet.

Not a big fan of kidney beans either. Pintos are my favorite. Black beans are good in Mexican dishes.
