We have a special houseguest staying for the next few weeks.

Our 9 year old GD sent us a special friend the other day. His name is Flat Stanley. We are having so much fun with him. He stays with us until Feb 23. He came from KY and we are to show him things close to us in CA. I am keeping a diary and taking pictures. We are putting different clothes on him: skiing outfit/skis, swim trunks/surf board, etc. A good friend has a son who has made copies of Stanley and is drawing the clothes on him. They are going to the snow for pictures. We are leaving tomorrow for Carmel and the ocean. We are going to visit two missions along the way. I guess i immediately put my teacher's hat on and am having such fun with this. Has anyone done this before? Suzanne

We've done Flat Stanley for two grandkids and for one friend.  Must be every kid does this in elementary school at least once. LOL

What fun! My DD and SIL did this for my other DDs girl. They took Flat Stanley out to Long Island and did a great job. Ships, the sea, pirates, windy cliffs overlooking the ocean... even had a photo of birds eating seed off of his head. It is a real honor to be given a Flat Stanley!

Can someone explain this Flat Stanley to me?  I have never heard of it, but it sounds like a neat idea.

For those of you who have never heard of him let me try to explain. Flat Stanley is a cut out of a boy. Each child gets to color him and then they are supposed to mail them to friends or family out of state or take him on vacation. That person then can mail it to a designated person or just someone they know will do the same thing.  Sort of like a chain letter, only with a purpose. It helps children to learn about different areas of the world. You ‘hang out’ with Flat Stanley for a few days and return him to the sender along with a letter detailing his adventures with you.  DD's school is also asking people to send in a postcard from their state or even their city (if they can).  I saw pictures from last year and one child had their Flat person end up in Sweden skiing I believe.  It is just neat for them to see something they made and see it in places all over the country and even the world.

I haven't hosted Flat Stanley for yrs. but I'm sure glad he's still traveling.  The teachers who use them are wonderful.

Thanks for the explanation, Disney.  Like Char, I had no idea what a Flat Stanley was.  It's a darling idea.

My oldest dd did this at school many years ago. She had fun with it. My oldest sister received him in the mail, took him to church where she teaches Sunday school and made pictures with him being passed among her 90+ years old Sunday school class.

A big adventure for children and very educational too.
