Here's an easy time-saving grilling tip from a Taste of Home reader:
"Don't waste any time scrubbing your grill rack. Instead, put it in a clean plastic trash bag and spray it generously with oven cleaner. Tightly close the bag and leave it overnight. The next day, washing the grate is a breeze."
—Leland S., De Queen, Arkansas
It's even easier and more environmentally friendly to put it in your self cleaning oven when you do clean the oven..

If you think your dog can't count, try putting 3 dog biscuits in your pocket, then give your dog only 2 of them!
What if you don't have a self cleaning oven? What then?
I don't have a self cleaning oven, and I'm alergic to oven cleaner. Guess I will just keep using an sos pad and some elbow grease.
Well, if YOU don't have a self cleaning oven you must surely have a friend or neighbor who has one and would let you put your grill grate in it when she cleans her oven.
We used to clean our grill rack by putting it in a garbage bag and then mixing approximately 3 cups ammonia, 3 cups vinegar and 1 cup baking soda in a bucket.
Pour that into the bag, and let it set for 24 hours. You could basically hose it off but there were usually a few spots that we had to go over with an SOS pad, but it wasn't bad.

My rfiend who lets me put my cast iron skillets into her oven when they need it and or my dish draining rack into her dishwasher lives on a farm 5 miles from town, we still manage to coordinate those things and I pick up things for her on sale days when she can't come to town and keep them in my freezer or fridge until she ca pick them up.
If you are so far out in the boonies why not just build a VERY HOT fire in your grill or in your burning barrel and burn the crud off that way. it's what we did when we lived in Alaska and both WA and OR. As long as you have a water hose ready, the barrel capped with a wire screen and the city or county permit burning it should not be a problem.
Since I am alone I don't grill any more, just passing on some hints from a LONG time ago.Usually where there is will there is way without using chemicals or plastic that clogs up landfills.
