Target has turkey breasts (bone-in) for .99 cents a pound instead of their usual $1.59. I bought three.....had purchased a couple back in May when they were on sale and they were excellent. The ex date is 2014 so they're not "left over" from Thanksgiving and just trying to reduce their inventory.

This is tasty! Just be sure to remove the skin before you put it in the slow cooker. I find the skin gets gummy cooked that way.
What a great price for turkey breast I cooked one from the freezer a couple of weeks ago and it was a welcome change Did us 3 meals.
This week about the only thing worth buying here on sale is bone in, skin on chicken breast at $1.88lb. Not a great price going by what I see some of you talking about, but quite good for here. The other good thing about them is the store has packs with small breasts, not these huge great big one. At one time that was fine for us, but I find that as we are getting older, we want smaller portions

I was noticing our flyer from our local produce and meat market this week. They have chicken legs and thighs for 59 cents a lb. That is the best that I have seen. My DH only likes dark meat,so that is good for us. I like white meat sometimes, depending of the meal. I am like you Tasty, and like the smaller pkgs, since I am the only one that eats them-it's nice for a change.
I am going to check our local stores for the turkey-it sounds good for a change and DH can toss it in the crock pot for a quick filling meal. And we can use it for a few meals, which will save a lot of work for him.

Good week at Krogers - They had bone-in Chicken Breast for 99c/lb - 2 of these easily feeds the four of us - so I bought 4 packs for the freezer. They also had 4 - 1 lb. packs of ground chicken breast marked down to $1.39 each (sell by date was the next day) I bought all 4 for my freezer. Also had half gallons of milk for $1 each and all brands of shredded cheese on sale - Kroger brand at $1.79 per 8 oz and Kraft & Sargento at $2.29 per 8 oz (but I had coupons for those to bring them down to Kroger brand prices). Philly cream cheese was in the $5 off 10 items sale bringing it down to 99c a pack. Spent a little more than usual this week, but have a lot of great meal ingredients for the next few weeks. Our Target store just put in a grocery section - I will have to start checking them out too.
One tip I have to make ground beef go further, is to add beans to 1 lb to make it stretch. So, for example, if you are cooking chili, add kidney beans, for tacos, add black beans, for spagetti add white italian beans. It makes the meal stretch and adds fiber and nutrients we all need.
Those prices sure make me feel like we are getting ripped off . Here in the ND "Hinterland" small towns you NEVER get any meat at less than $2.20 lbs, no matter whether it is chicken, turkey, pork or beef. Only around Thanksgiving and X-Mas is turkey about #1.59 lbs. Bone in turkey breast is at least $1.79 o sale. The lowest I have seen boneless chicken breasts for the last year is $5.00 for 3 lbs and that happens very seldom.
They blame the prices on transport/shipping costs and being small stores but our 2 stores belong to chains (Jack and Jill and Super Value) so the chains do have buying power but they sure don't pass the savings on to the customers.
Be prepared for much higher prices this winter and next year. Our farmers are getting 75% more for their hay this year because of the dorugth in other cattle raising states. Corn is going way up and that means the chickens will be much higher in price this winter. Wheat has also suffered in some states and flour may go up.
Shortage if hey will also influence the price of milk because dairy cows have to eat......... (I just ordered 100 lbs of regular, non-instant fat free powdered milk from a Mormon whole sale supplier and will order another 100 lbs on August 1st.Hope the price will hold steady for a couple of weeks. If kept in a cool, dark place in AIR TIGHT food grade plastic buckets it will keep for up to 20 yrs. An unheated basement or root cellar are ideal for storage.
Since I have to pay shipping from Idaho to ND the milk costs me $2.20 p gallon, still a good saving over our store prices of over $4.00 p gal. They rarely have milk o sale here and never for less than $3.50 for skimmed.
Home made Greek yogurt made from non-instant powdered milk is just as good as what you buy in the store and a LOT CHEAPER.The non-instant also takes up much less storage room than the instant and is cheaper when bought in bulk.Yes, it takes a couple of minutes to dissolve (using a whisk) but worth the little trouble because of better price.
I just bought whole bone in chicken breast for $1.29 a pound. They came in the large family pack. I bought a large package for $4.79. I will bake them, and remove the meat from the bones and put in the freezer to use in several ways. I keep the bones and skin also and add some carrots, onions, celery and water and a little chicken bouillon and make a very good chicken stock to use later in soups and other recipes. I try and use every bit!
i just went to our local Hyvee for ckn. legs & thighs for 59 cent a pound but they were out of them, said they'd have some later in the day or tom. i will return tom. & ck it out. if not then they will give me a rain ck. good price for sure. my DH prefers the dark meat so that makes it worth while. i write up a menu every week & stick to MOST of it MOST of the time. sometimes it just doesn't work out but that's ok cause when it's in the frzr. there's always another day to use it.
