    Good Morning!

WOW!! Over 50 posts yesterday, we done good!! I was glad to see some of the newbies post and we hope you can join us on a regular basis!!

Thought for Today- In three words, I can summarize life: it goes on.-Unknown

    It's National Canned Tomato Day.
Tomatoes are the only canned food that serious chefs will admit to using. This is largely because of the excellence--although it has big problems to overcome in the last decade or two--of San Marzano tomatoes. Grown in the volcanic soils in the Campania region of Italy, these are the tomatoes that made the red sauces of Italy famous. They're plum ("Roma") tomatoes, and they dominate the cuisine of Naples and, really, all of southern Italy.

The decline of San Marzano tomatoes--which owes to many forces, including plant diseases and a shift of the farm population--has made the American products preferable. Which makes sense: tomatoes are New World fruits to begin with. The two brands most commonly available are Progresso (a company that began in New Orleans) and Cento. One or the other will be found on the shelves of any decent supermarket. Both are made with whole Roma tomatoes and fresh basil.

I only buy the whole tomatoes, even though the first thing I do with them is to crush them (by hand or in a food processor). Why bother, when you can buy the tomatoes already crushed in a can? Here's why. Think about it: if tomatoes have to be whole and perfect to go into one can, but can have some problems that can be cut away for the can of crushed or pureed product, which can will have the better tomatoes? And it's almost always the case that the less a food is processed, the better it is.

Filling the basket with hugs and prayers for everyone!

Special hugs and prayers for Pat and her family, Nancy Z and Russell, Gat and Jeanette, Mabel and Floyd, Anne and V, and Ruth’s Joshua!

Remember the group prayer! Heavenly Father, we ask that you watch over and care for all the Cooking Seniors and those they love as they go about their day.

I did notice several of you posted a little about yourself on yesterday’s post. I started a “Getting to Know You” thread so please repeat it there so we can find it.

I have the Sears guy coming today for the third time to fix the ice maker. Hopeful the third time is the charm and they will get it right this time.

Sandy-Glad the living room is done! What is next on the paint list??

Rosie-I was surprised at Daisy getting home that quickly!! Warn her to be very careful who she gets a ride with. Shorty combined his morning naps with his afternoon and evening naps so he is still asleep.

Mabel-Floyd sounds like Roy did when he first went to the apartment. Everyone gathered at the rec room in the afternoon. When he first moved in, he was not going down to join them no time, no way, no how. After a few weeks every time I called guess where he was??

Pat-sounds like they have been a busy bunch. Let us know when Keith decides to see the world!!

Tippy-Thanks for the pumpkin bread!! Shorty got the crumbs!! I am so happy that both women were found!

Ruth-Hope your eyes are better today.

Linda and Marcie-Good to see you both!! Please may this a regular stop!!

Nancy B-Loved the centerpiece!! And no the crown does not make you a princess!! Not that kind of crown anyway!

Lois-Meatloaf may be on my menu later this week. It sounded so good!!

GAT!!! So happy to have you back with us!! Prayers??? for the porta-potty! Do they need them?? LOL

Sandy-I hope you don't mind but I am going to paste it here!

This is from Stan, Tam's son!

Wow, you guys are in the big time now! And what a wonderful tribute to Mom - thanks.

We're all doing pretty good. Dad has his moments of extreme loneliness, especially early in the morning and in the evening. He and Mom used to play cards of some sort every night until she lost the strength in her hands, maybe a week before she went into Hospice. Dad is planning a trip sometime after the new year to visit my sister in Tennessee. How long he'll stay is up in the air -- a couple weeks, a couple months, whatever. We're planning on throwing Dad and Reudy (their mini-schnauzer) into Becky's van and meeting my sis and hubby about halfway, then doing a swap.

We visit Dad every Friday where he makes something for dinner, we bring something, or we go out to eat. This past Friday we took him to Red Lobster, then went back to his house where he and Becky got to visit while I reconciled their checking account - two months worth, mind you. LOL

Hope everyone on the BB is doing well -- give them a "hi" for me.

Take care, Sandy, and thanks again...

    Stan

Zora this is the Chili Sauce recipe I use:

    12 tomatoes (peeled and blended)
    3 onions (ground)
    3 green peppers (ground)
    1-1/4 cups of sugar
    1 tablespoon salt
    3/4 teaspoon cinnamon
    1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
    1/2 cup vinegar
    Cook 2 hours or more
Add some crushed red pepper to taste
Put in sterilized jars and seal
    Makes about six pints,
    half of original recipe

I also add a chopped jalperno pepper too (optional)

I wish I could sleep until it is light outside, but at 6 I am up! I want to thank all of you who sent me bday wishes. That is the fun part of the day.
No plans after the dentist at 10:30. It will be near 84 degrees today. That's my idea of perfection. Nancy B

    Good Morning Everyone!

I like being able to find yesterday's posts easily to see who posted later in the day and evening. The Getting to Know You thread is a good idea. I will do that in a few minutes.

I hope that everyone who tries the meatloaf recipe enjoys it. It is from the book that the chior in my DD's church sold a year or two ago.

I never did get to the sewing machine yesterday so hope to get to it today to work on a wall hanging I am working on for my church bazzar(sp?). It is in about a month so need to get on it. I do have it started.

I may try to get a flu shot today. They are doing that at the drug store close me today. If the line is not too long, I will do that.

Welcome to the new ones who posted yesterday! I hope you will stop in often. We are a good caring group.

Zora, thanks for including the note from Stan. We all love to hear from them.

I plan to make an apple pie today if I get a chance. I think I will get the crust ready before I go to get that shot and then it will be ready to do when I get home. I found some mountain apples yesterday, they are staymans, a kind I have enjoyed in the past.

I will add some hugs and prayers to the basket for all and some extras for those with special needs.

    Wishing Everyone A Happy Day!

    Good Morning Everyone,

20 years ago, we were hit with 24" of snow, the leaves were all on the trees, so the heavy snow took down trees, large limbs etc. and we were without electricity for 8 days. When we went outdoors it sounded like gun shots as the branches cracked and fell. And this year we are about 30° above normal. Quite a difference! I'll take the "above normal" any day!

Nothing planned except spending the day at the Nursing Home. Floyd is always cold, so I am bringing over a bunch of sweat shirts. I used to hang them out on the line, so they wouldn't shrink..don't think they will be getting that kind of treatment now!

Nothing else new, so will say "Have a great day"

    Good morning,

Well I must say it was easier to find the post this morning.

Raising a glass of tomato juice and toasting our Tomato King on Canned Tomato Day. Hope you have a great day, Floyd! (Grin)

Sandy, Daisy thanks you for the doggie bones, she tucked one away until she rests up from her trip to Shorty's. I thank you for the pudding salad recipe, I had forgotten about it, but loved it when I was making it. Will have to do that now that you have jostled my thinker.

Mabel, with the weather so hot are the leaves turning? I have no idea why they turn but assume the sun's position or the temperature has something to do with it. Still remember taking Amtrak from Albany to Utica along the Mohawk in October…breathtaking.

Pat, did they get your font back to where it is supposed to be? If not, if you have a wheel on your mouse you can hold down the control key and turn the wheel to change the font size. Still smothering you in hugs. Well I kept reading and saw that Nancy was way ahead of me, but will leave it for today.

Tippy, are your storms all gone-gone now? Do hate those things, especially at night when you can't see. Any more word on your friends DIL this morning? Jackalopes are real, I have a picture of one. Love the backsides of the presidents … shame on you, lolololol. Thinking Critter and I will have a geography lesson this weekend and I can explain about Mt. Rushmore…LOL.

Nancy, you and Russell are having way too much excitement in your lives these days…I admire your upbeat optimistic attitude. Hugs for both of you.

Good to see one of my favorite people, Marcia, popping in…hope you do it on a regular basis.

NanB, you can't fool us…we all know you are Princess Mom anyway with the way those kids spoil you. Daisy thanks you for the bones and doggie bags, but wonders why doggie bags don't have treats in them. The center piece was lovely.

Lois, the BBQ meatloaf looks yummers, thank you. Will be looking for Gat's review on using it on his ribs (bet that was hard to shower off).

Ruth, I make one very similar to the leftover chicken recipe, except I mix it in with rice. Delish!

Lynne, what a pain in the tush to go that long without hydro!
Wow, Penny, 3500 acres. I can't keep up with 10 uncultivated.

Doreen the pretzels sound fabulous, will copy the recipe to make soon. Thank you! Always looking for new munchers. Haven't thought of Tripoley in years. Wow. Did you win?

Gat I used to have a poster in my cubicle at work "I'm so far behind I think I'm ahead" Made no sense at all, but at the same time said it all. LOL How did the ribs turn out? Glad to hear Jeanette is doing great, now to get you off so-so and on to great status.

Ahhh Leisa, thanks for including Tam's recipes. So thoughtful…didn't have the bleu cheese dressing, so that is a treasure.

Waving back to Helen as I pop an olive in my mouth.

WOW, Anne, what a beautiful plant. Promise not to touch it so it will have a chance of thriving in our new home. Yummo platter you set out, thanks. Gotta have parties more often, now I have a good sounding Raisin Spiced Cookie recipe to try.

Peg you do know the way to my heart with the avocados. Right off a tree??? Ahh be still my beating heart.

Beth, take a left at the corner by Anne's plant. Gat can you make us some signs pointing to the bathrooms. I see Reimanns was nice enough to put in several.

Crea, you can save me time by sending a box of the raisin cookies since it grabbed both our attentions. Toss in some chili sauce since a box will already be coming. OKOK, the recipe will work I guess. Drats, back to the drawing board.

Joyce!! Hey lady, good to see you. I copied the lima bean recipe for Mom, that is one of the veggies I can't eat…but she loves them, so a thank you from her.

Hmmm…Peppermint Patty…Peppermint Patty, that sounds vaguely familiar… Welcome back!! Sounds like a fabulous vacation!! Do you have photos online anywhere?? I've never been up that way and would love to see it.

Cats! That salad is to die for, thanks! Think I'm going to have to invite Mom to lunch next week.

Peg, your techie has several years of making up to do for his "old lady" comment. He can come here next.

Ahhh, Sherry, I didn't know you were bowing out of the clowning. The community will lose a valuable member when Glad_E_Ola retires. But I guess even a clown has to hang up his shoes at some point.

Merle, crossing fingers, toes and eyes while saying a prayer that this doctor works out for you. We went through the new doctor routine when we moved up here…problem was we couldn't find one taking new patients! Finally, the doc in charge of Walt's cardio rehab took us out of kindness.

Zora, great idea with the Getting To Know You thread, we might want to bump it up occasionally. You so smartest. Good luck on the Sears guy, you know my feelings on that. Daisy said she rode home with a very nice guy that smelled really good in his black leathers. She loved the wind blowing her ears on the back of his Hawg. Hmmmm. Maybe Ppatty saw her in sturgis???
