Good Morning:
Bob talked to Mark this afternoon and they are still in Texas with transmission problems this time. Hopefully it will be an easy fix Tuesday and they will be back on the road headed West again.
Bob grilled Beer Can Chicken today with ginger ale like Ann suggested. Man it was fantastic. I had gotten some Weber Beer Can Chicken Rub and used that. We really enjoyed it and he also did a Boston Butt like they suggested in Cook's Illustrated Grilling Magazine. We will eat that for Memorial Day. We do need to get a heat defuser for the Big Green Egg, our ceramic grill/smoker. I love the thing and it grills and smokes great food.
Bob was saying there were 4 fish on his fishing guide for Monday and he might get up early and go fishing. Then I reminded him it was Memorial Day. He told me "never mind"!
Thought of the Day-The patriot's blood is the seed of Freedom's tree. -Thomas Campbell
Today is Memorial Day. It is officially celebrated on the last Monday during the month of May. Memorial Day is dedicated to service men and women who gave their lives for freedom and country. It is also a time to remember loved ones who have passed away. The roots of Memorial Day go back to 1865 and the end of the Civil War.
Memorial Day was traditionally held on the 30th of May. In 1971, Congress changed it to the last Monday in order to afford a three day holiday weekend. Regardless of the date, we encourage you to attend a parade, and to visit a cemetery to honor and remember our servicemen . Take time to remember lost loved ones in whatever way you feel appropriate.
Did you Know? Memorial Day was first called Decoration Day. It was changed to Memorial Day in 1882.
Memorial Day also marks the beginning of the gardening and summer seasons, even though summer will not occur for a few weeks later. It is usually marked by holding the first family picnic of the year.

Zora thanks for posting Jodies photo it is not one of her better ones, she does have a nice smile.
I wonder does any one have any ideas how to deter foxes from the garden, they have eaten the shoots on our new tree plus trying to dig the new plants.I know its different over here but thought someone might have ideas.
Sandy glad ds is home, thanks for posting miss A photos she is a little dear.

Penny miss A is lovely.
Nancy take a look at yesterdays post Zora has put a photo of Jodie on.
Margaret, you posted my picture again! That's exactly the way I look at 6a.m.
Yesterday I went to get the potted geraniums I always get. They used to be $20, then went to $24, and now are $36! I bought 2 less than I wanted - one goes in the bird bath and 2 go on stones near that. I got pink cuz they didn't have 3 red ones left. Between those and my new awning I will have to dig out that tin cup.
My son said the races were so hot that at the end he bo't a $5 bottle of ice water and poured it over his head. He was under a big cover and still got sun burned. A nice oriental couple behind him sprayed sun screen on him and others - they didn't speak English.
I remember 1936 when people slept in the parks and went to movies cuz the theatres were the only places in town with air-c. NanB
Howdy, Howdy,
Whew! warm one yesterday. thank God for A.C.
I watched some of the race and thouught of your son Nancy.
We left home to go out to lunch and by the time we got home, wow.... Quite a change. Marco was leading pretty good and then when we got home I could not even find him in lisitng. what happened?
I would have loved to make the picture of Miss A larger but couldn't do it. It must be the way Penny's DD has her camera set.
My #+*% computer is letting the heat affect it. Grr. Working on it.
It has a few years on it but a new one is not in our budget at the time being. Too many other things a head of it. I have windows XP and I know it good so hate to change.
Off for some breakfast so be back in a while ( fingers crossed)
So hope Doreen and Mark can get on way. Maybe best not on road ove this holiday weeked
.
Happy Memorial Day...Thinking of those who can celebrate and those who cannot celebrate. This was in the Eagle Tribune today. His website has lots of good editorial cartoons.
It's cool here; had the windows open and the spring quilt on last night. I am in process of making pea soup. Will set some aside for later in the week and will freeze the rest. This pea soup has all sorts of vegetables in it...carrots, onion, cabbage, parsnips, and turnips. If need be, I will thicken it with a little instant potato. Used a piece of ham with bone for flavor. Love soup even when it's hot. I also made cold gazpacho soup; we like that for lunch.
No big plans for today. Hope everyone has a great day. Waving to all!
Ann
Happy Memorial Day! I have to get my flag up yet. Don't want to wait too long. Prayers for Sally going up. That infection is a very worrisome thing.
Zora: I had a delicious blueberry/cream cheese pie once that I sure wish I had the recipe for!
Margaret: I can't help you with a fox repellent. I bought my chipmunk repellent at an Ace Hardware. Do you have anything like that there? They can probably help.
Rose: When you talk to Doreen again, find out when their ETA for N.M. is, okay? They wanted to go to the Indian dances at Gallup. Of course, the way it is going, they might not make it this year!
I haven't heard any more from Cheri. I suppose they are doing a lot of the traveling around they were going to do. I am anxious to hear as I don't have a clue when they will be my way.
Yesterday, we had a light wind in the afternoon but the fire fighters were able to start fighting that fire in the Gila. However, a new one sprang up closer to Reserve. Hopefully, they were able to get that one under control. I haven't heard yet. Over 100,000 acres have burned so far in the main fire. Today has dawned clear here. We can see the mountain a mile in front of us!
Music went well yesterday and, surprisingly, we were UP in attendance instead of down. We also had more people stay for potluck, which was really good eating too. There was a delicious lemon cake that tasted so great! I took a soup and cookies. My soup was a hit and I must confess something. I goofed on the recipe but it was a good goof. What happened was I had googled to find a good sausage soup. Found two so I sort of adopted and adapted both to my own recipe. It called for 1 tablespoon of Liquid Smoke but I goofed in the reading and picked up the ingredient above it, which was 1/4 cup! I thought it was a lot of Liquid Smoke! But, like I said, it was a good goof! It was a big hit because of the flavor. One woman said it was the best soup she had ever tasted, went back for a second bowl and asked for the recipe! Now, I have to remember how I adapted the thing to fit what I had on hand!
I am afraid to go look at my garden this morning. We had a cold front come through and it got down into the 20s last night. I hope the Wall o' Waters protected the tomatoes enough. The furnace has been coming on and it was set at 62, which has been low enough to keep it from coming on. I still have my coolers covered and was thinking of uncovering them but I am glad I hadn't done that yet because the furnace would have been turned off. The system is a dual thing, with heat or cooling capabilities and, when the coolers get uncovered, I switch over from heating to cooling.
So much for my news of this weekend. We won't be doing anything today so I am going to carry on with normal activities, like washing a couple of loads. The deadline on that job DD put in an application for is Tuesday so we will be on tenterhooks from now on. She will have to go in for an interview and needs to go to Socorro tomorrow to fill up her pickup. I did that Saturday and picked up a few groceries while there. The gas there was $3.64.9 and, out here, it is still $3.87.9. I had received a $70 pre-paid credit card as a bonus for buying my four tires during the tire sale so I used it. My gas came to $69! I have a whole dollar left on the card. Wow.

Here's a cute read from my friend, Mary who lives in Indianapolis. Love the seagull one!!
KIDS IN CHURCH 3-year-old Reese : 'Our Father, Who does art in heaven, Harold is His name.. Amen.' ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ A little boy was overheard praying: 'Lord, if you can't make me a betterboy, don't worry about it. I'm having a real good time like I am.' ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ After the christening of his baby brother in church, Jason sobbed all the way home in the back seat of the car. His father asked him three times what was wrong. Finally, the boy replied, 'That preacher said he wanted us brought up in a Christian home, and I wanted to stay with you guys.' ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ One particular four-year-old prayed, 'And forgive us our trash baskets as we forgive those who put trash in our baskets.' ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ A Sunday school teacher asked her children as they were on the way to church service, 'And why is it necessary to be quiet in church?' One bright little girl replied, 'Because people are sleeping.' ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ A mother was preparing pancakes for her sons, Kevin 5, and Ryan 3. The boys began to argue over who would get the first pancake. Their mother saw the opportunity for a moral lesson.. 'If Jesus were sitting here, He would say, 'Let my brother have the first pancake, I can wait.' Kevin turned to his younger brother and said, ' Ryan, you be Jesus !' ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ A father was at the beach with his children when the four-year-old son ran up to him, grabbed his hand, and led him to the shore where a seagull lay dead in the sand. 'Daddy, whathappened to him?' The son asked. 'He died and went to Heaven,' the Dad replied. The boy thought a moment and then said, 'Did God throw him back down?' ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ A wife invited some people to dinner. At the table, she turned to their six-year-old daughter and said, 'Would you like to say the blessing?' 'I wouldn't know what to say,' the girl replied. 'Just say what you hear Mommy say,' the wife answered. The daughter bowed her head and said, 'Lord, why on earth did I invite all these people to dinner?' ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I just went out at 9:30 and my tomato plants are wilted from the heat, poor little things.
My son said the oriental couple behind them at the races had come from China(?) just for the races!
The temps are to begin going down tomorrow, a little more each day. We are all ready! NanB
A Blessed Memorial Day to each of you. We are truly blessed everyday because of the sacrifices of so many men and women who have served this country.
Quiet day for me. I am in Ga. Came yesterday afternoon and if get chores and errands done early enough will go back to NC tomorrow afternoon. This house has a lot of dirt and dust lying around that became visiable when moved the furniture so trying to get some of that cleaned up.
So dry here, the grass crunches when step on it. A little overcast, don't know if we will get any rain or not.
Brenda, thank you for being so generous but no thank you, please don't share your bladder infection. Just get better quickly so you can make that trip to the Smokies.
Later this afternoon will go see Jenny and the children. Miss them terribly.
All of you take care and be safe.
groovygrammyPaid $3.15 for gas yesterday at a Walmart Murphy Gas place. Filled it to the brim.
Good Morning from Sunny Alberta! . It is 63 F here now and should reach 66 today, with the rest of the week inching towards 70*F. I love it! I can even share a few degrees with my friends. It's too warm for Yellowflower in Ontario, and much too hot for some of you as well.
Brenda, do you mean $3.15 per gallon? currently we are paying $1.109 per Litre for gas. Let's see if I can find the conversion...1 gal=3.785 litres, so if my calculations are correct, that would be $4.20 per gallon for us. And our gas goes up and down. I believe politics has an awful lot to do with it. We are sitting on the stuff, yet world prices seem to determine what we pay. The minute something goes wrong somewhere in the world up go the prices. A storm in the vicinity of an oil refinery in the US and up go the prices. Blah!
Still in jammies. I've had a tough week and have tried to rest up as much as possible. But last night I had another episode of restless feet, and couldn't find the lotion I use, so I played on the computer awhile and found my alpaca socks to put over the cotton ones i always wear. Then I returned to bed and eventually sleep did come. It was a very warm night but I hate to open the window a crack because the traffic would waken me, and I have enough trouble getting to sleep.
Today I need to straighten things up here to prepare for another busy work week. I think I'll shut the computer down and focus on this room. What a mess it's getting to be again.
Wishing each one of you a lovely day! JP
Good afternoon, another hot/humid one here, staying in the AC....don't like this stuff at all.
Zora....that chicken sounds delicious, could eat chicken all the time, as a matter of fact I do eat a lot of it. Oh yea....scared the pants right off of both of us.
Margaret.....awwww, your Jodie is just so cute....I can almost hear her lovely British accent, loved being able to see her.
NancyB....yep, was just sooooo hot at the track yesterday, friends of mine that have gone for probably 50 years opted out....really unusual for them.
Sandy....Thanks so much for posting the pictures of Miss A.....yep, she's growing like a weed & talking up a storm, like you, I seems to think she's growing too fast. Don't know anything about how DD sent you the pics, but will tell her about them being small. Thanks again. Glad to hear DS is out of the hospital, always a worry to us Moms no matter how old they get.
Ann.....your pea soup sounds good, I'm sure my DH would like it.
AnnB.....LOL....it's almost like that gas station knew how much money you had on that card!!
Beverly.....yikes....good pictures but scary thoughts!
Brenda.....no thanks on the bladder infection.....been there & hate it....start drinking lots of water....sigh....more to worry about.
Egee......did you load up bunches of baking gear?!!?!?
JP....gas around here is expensive too, but not as bad as yours.
Have no idea what I'm having for dinner this evening, need to get out in the garden & get some more leaf lettuce to fix, doesn't last too long, need rain.
Sure hope everyone is having a good day, see you later.
