Oh just think of all the information we've shared over the years...

Now we'll have it at our finger tips as we grow our Library Center.

Read and interesting article? Post the link.

Found an informative website? Post the link.

Read a terrific book? Share the title and author?

Watched an education show? Tell us about it.

To keep this somewhat organized, I think we should follow the rules of any normal library... shh... LOL
Let's keep the normal chitchat and discussion to our daily threads and feel free to report your "find" in the daily room.

But let's also copy that new found information to the Library for easy reference for us six months from now as well as creating an awesome resource center for a new diabetic stopping at our house for the first time!.

I love libraries! and I love learning. Looking forward to some great things happening here.

    A book --

When I was first diagnosed, I found a book called "The First Year - Type 2 Diabetes" by Gretchen Becker. It was written 2001, but I think it is still a very good book. There is a lot of really good information for someone that is newly diagnosed and knows nothing about this disease. And I admit, before I was diagnosed, I didn't know much at all.

    Email article I received:

From Real Age Tip of the Week (October 8-9, 2007)

    What Color Is Your Tortilla?

If you crave the occasional Mexican treat -- and who doesn't? -- opt for a tortilla with this hue: blue.

Besides having a softer texture and sweeter taste than tortillas made from white corn, blue corn tortillas may have less impact on your blood sugar -- and possibly your waist! Here's the "why" and the "how."

    Hold the Starch

Researchers put both blue and white tortillas to the test and found that the blue flats had a lower starch content and lower glycemic load than the white variety. Which means that Team Blue is more likely to keep your blood sugar levels stable and help keep your appetite under control.

    Color Me Antioxidants

Another reason to go blue -- or black, or red, or purple? The rich-in-color tortillas abound with anthocyanins, natural antioxidants that help steamroller DNA-damaging compounds hanging around in your body. Plus, darker-pigmented varieties dole out more protein. The downside? They tend to have more fat, too -- so don't eat 'em until you're blue in the face.

I had mentioned some shows I watched that did "experiments" about some of the things we've heard about dieting/health. It was a very interesting show. I did email the channel (Discovery Health Channel) asking if I would re-air or if I could buy a DVD. They said it is not available on DVD but it will be shown again. I will try to post a reminder when it gets closer to the date. Here is the information:

Unfortunately, I don't have a link for this article, so I've typed it in. It is from "First", 11/12/07 p. 25.

Put extra pep in your step with pumpkin

Pumpkin's unique plant compounds help prevent holiday weight gain!

Balanced blood sugar - Outsmarting winter weight gain can be as easy as adding 1/2 cup of pumpkin to your daily diet. Chinese researchers credit the vegetable's stores of D-chiro-Inositol, a plant compound that prompts the pancreas to produce more of the hormone insulin. Increased levels of insulin enable cells to break down blood sugar into usable energy instead of storing it as fat. Plus, higher insulin levels prevent the blood sugar crashes that can cause cravings.

Freedom from colds - Just 1 cup of pumpkin contains a whopping 146 percent of the daily recommended intake of vitamin A. This antioxidant strengthens mucous membranes and the cells lining the respiratory tract, helping to form a barrier that keeps germs and bacteria from entering the body. And if sniffles do set in, vitamin A also helps regulate the immune system so it is better able to fight off infection.

No more joint pain - Eating ¼ cup of pumpkin seeds daily can keep soreness at bay, reveals a study in the journal Pharmacological Research. The magic ingredient: copper. This mineral triggers the production of collagen and elastin, proteins that reinforce connective joint tissue to protect muscles and ligaments from injury.

All-day energy - Sweet pumpkin is one of nature's top sources of potassium-a cup of puree provides 33 percent more of the mineral than a banana. And that's a boon for energy levels since potassium is key to the metabolism and storage of carbohydrates, ensuring the body always has a source of fuel at the ready.

There were also 3 recipes (Autumn Soup, Thai Chicken Stir-Fry and Spiced Smoothies). I will post them under our recipe thread.

I get a weekly email from Real Age. It is regarding good health. This was in today's email.

    **************************************************

The Mineral That's Good for Blood Sugar

There's a certain mineral that may help reduce your diabetes risk.

Here's a clue: You might already be getting plenty of it if you eat lots of whole grains, beans, nuts, and leafy greens. It's magnesium -- found naturally in many plant-based foods. Just how much might keep diabetes out of the picture?

    A Little More Magnesium
Along with watching your weight and being more active, certain dietary choices may help reduce your risk of diabetes -- a blood sugar disorder that can spell trouble for your heart, eyes, kidneys, and more. According to a recent study, you may be able to cut your diabetes risk by 15 percent just by bumping up your daily magnesium intake another 100 milligrams (mg). Why? Magnesium helps your body metabolize blood sugar.

    Bread, Beans, and Bananas

Although more research is needed before recommending daily magnesium supplementation, making magnesium-rich foods part and parcel of your eating plan is a great idea. How can you bump up your intake by 100 mg? Easy. Check off one of the combos on this list today and you're there:

    - An ounce of peanuts, a half cup of raisins, and an ounce of sunflower seeds
    - Three-quarters cup of cooked spinach sprinkled with toasted pine nuts
    - One and a half cups of oatmeal with a quarter cup of chopped dates
    - A half cup of lima beans and a half cup of navy beans
    - A turkey sandwich on whole-wheat bread
    - Ten ounces of yogurt with a cup of fresh blueberries and a cup of OJ
    - A cup of brown rice with two chopped figs
    - A cup of Cheerios with a cup of low-fat milk and a banana

    Count Your Colas

Before you reach for your next cola – regular, diet, or decaffeinated – consider your both health According to the recent Framingham Osteoporosis study, the more cola women drink the lower their bone-mineral density (BMD). Researchers measured BMD in 1,413 women and 1,125 men. In women, drinking three or more colas a day was associated with lower BMD; in men, cola had no effect. Noncola carbonated beverages did not affect BMD in either men or women. Although more studies are needed to confirm the results, you may want to limit your cola intake.

This is a collection of sites we've collected since the DC was started in 2004 - we're constantly adding to it.  Hopefully all the links will work.

    Happy Surfing!

A good site if you also need to loose weight is:

http://hp2010.nhibihin.net/menuplanner/menu.cgi    Here you can plan your day around the calories you are on and also by the servings your own nutritionist wants you to have.  It enables you to put it all together in a balanced way, one meal at a time, and add more where ever needed if you are short. It is a little slow though, totaling each entry one at a time. Nutritionist loved this site.
