Just found out on Thursday, that I am "border line" diabetic. So am now on medication (Metformin) and will have to start using a glucometar (not looking forward to that - don't even like to "see" needles. Will probably be seeing a dietician in the next couple of weeks.
Meanwhile, any help sure would be appreciated. Dr. said to cut back on carbs (hubby is supposed to too, as his tryglicerates were high) and Dr. said I should eat more protein (but hubby has high cholestrol) so he wants to cut back on meat and cheese, etc.
I very seldom eat sweets or dessert so that is not a problem.

Di - I am sorry you have been diagnosed, but it is good because you can start controlling it now and get it under control. When I was first diagnosed, I read a book that I found very helpful: "The First Year - Type 2 Diabetes" by Gretchen Becker. As Mary said, the dietician will also give you a lot of great information. I do like sweets, but my downfall is bread and potatoes. I could live off of those, but they are terrible for diabetics. So you have to learn what you should/shouldn't have. I also hate needles. I still turn my head when the nurse checks my A1C (a 3-month average of your blood sugar numbers). But you do get used to doing it yourself and it's not too bad any more. One nurse told me to use my thumb to apply pressure to the finger I'm testing and it won't hurt so much and she is right. Alternate which finger you use and that will help also. Please do come visit us on our daily thread. On weekends, we have one thread for the entire weekend. Feel free to ask any and all questions you have. We have all been in the same spot you are now.
