(NaturalNews) Many of usalready know that eating fruits and vegetables makes us healthy and energetic. We also know from experience that food and beauty are related. Now we havefurther evidence from research from University of St. Andrews in the UKthat fruit and vegetable intake is also associated with healthy glowing skin.
Carotenoids make yourskin glow
According to theresearch published recently in the American Journal of Public Health, carotenoids in the fruits are responsible for the healthy skin glow.Carotenoids are the red, yellow and orange pigments found in fruits andvegetables.Lycopene, which is a carotenoid in tomatoes and red peppers, provides the redpigment. Beta carotene, which is a carotenoid in carrot and green leafyvegetables, provides the yellow pigment. These carotenoids deposit under theskin and provide several health benefits.
Beauty is linked tofruit and vegetable consumption
In this study, the scientistsfollowed the dietary patterns of 35 students over a period of six weeks. Thegroup did not use any make-up. They also did not get any significant UV rayexposure from the sun or self-tanning machines recently. These students filled out food frequency questionnaires which providedscientists data around fruit and vegetable consumption. Potatoes were notcounted as vegetables in this study. They recorded the change in skin color and compared perceived attractivenessamong these students. At the end of the study, they found that students who ate more fruits and vegetables had a healthy golden skin. On the contrary, students who reduced the amount looked less attractive by the end of the study.
Skin tone becomesattractive with as little as three additional portions a day
Youdo not have to gorge yourself with lots of fruits and vegetables for along period of time. Adding just two extra portions had a noticeable effect onattractiveness within a period of six weeks. To be precise, eating additional 2.91 portions per day would make you lookhealthy. Eating additional 3.3 portions of fruits and vegetables would make youlook attractive. On average, one portion of fruit or vegetable is equivalent to 80g. Forexample, one apple, banana or orange will count as one portion.Although this study focused on the link between the change in skin tone fromcarotenoids and attractiveness, previous studies showed that fruits andvegetables have several vitamins and minerals which improve skinhealthand slow down the aging process. This study has some limitations because all of the volunteers in the study wereCaucasian. So the scientists suggested that another study may be needed todetermine if the effect is the same for non-Caucasians as well.Learn more: http://www.naturalnews.com/035415_foods_skin_health_beauty.html#ixzz23rFi5eKO
Good Morning HL Ladies!!!
I see everyone is trying to add more fruits and vegetables to our plates. Once we pass the 20-something plus we all want to look younger and more beautiful! Now we have evidence that fruits and vegetables will help us glow!!!
I slept in to 6 am! LOL! Getting ready to head to the Y. Not sure if I will elliptical or do sets of sit ups, push ups, & squats or a combination of both. See how crowded it is in different rooms. Once I return I need to pay bills, do computer work, and clean the litter box.
Charlotte, my sister, will arrive around noon. We will be celebrating my parents 60th wedding anniversary tonight. Aug. 24th is the actual date, but they might be headed out to Colorado.
Our temperatures are cooling down, now we just need RAIN!!! Have a wonderful weekend!
Good post Kris. I usually eat fruits and veggies, this time of year is easier with all the fresh choices.
Have a nice visit with sister and celebration this weekend.
Not much going on this early. Mel has done his morning breathing stuff and meds.
hugs to all
just enjoyed a good hot breakfast at the motel, now just relaxing.....hope everyone has a great day! ((hugs))
Good morning girlfriends!I did it again, got myself out of bed and forced myself to workout. I did the 5 12mm again. I figure its the quickest one and does the most miles... an hour for 5 miles. Anyway, its done again for the day, thank God. My tummy was grumbling at me at about mile 2, so I was gonna stop, but just made myself continue. I knew I could eat afterwards. Kris! Thank you for the great topic this week girl! Glad you could "sleep in". Hope you enjoy your workout :) I wonder, couldnt you sleep in more on a Saturday? Dusta, enjoy your day!Jill, I just love staying in hotels. Hope youre enjoying yourself!Last night I got a headache right before I closed work, so ended up having McDonalds instead of the chili. So chili tonight. One day closer to my weekend, and babysitting! Yay!Breakfast - WW Toast with ICBINB 1 fried egg with parm cheese, coffee yogurt (395 calories)Snack - Nutrigrain BarLunch - Chicken Sandwich on WW Sandwich Thin, Baked ChipsDinner - Chili and Garlic Toast
Hello Healthy Beauties!
Kris, thank you so much. I love this topic and it's preaching to me! I don't know about the rest of you, but my goal is not just to be healthy but to be attractive..... so, do we need 3.3 servings per day above and beyond what we normally consume. I do usually have a nice salad and sliced tomato with supper and some type of fruit earlier in the day- but I think I need more. LOL Today I added sliced carrots to my lunch- so there's a serving- I am going to strive for my fruits and veggies, really need clearer skin, who doesn't, right?
Natasha, good for you for forging ahead and getting that cardio in this morning- I thank you, your heart thanks you- your arteries thank you- everyone is happy! :)
Jill, enjoy your "me time" in the motel- sounds nice to have some relaxing time to regroup and just do whatever.
Dusta, we didn't do y.s. this morning- just went to the fresh market and bought a couple of melons and some tomatoes- gotta have those homegrowns until they run out of them. Then I will go into withdrawals for the winter. LOL
Waves and hugs to all- I am going to weed eat after DH finishes mowing. I called Mom and we chatted for a while. She is doing well. Just finished lunch- well almost- still a couple of chips and guacamole left. :)
Break'fast: Ez. toast - lightly buttered- one half of the toast with 1 tsp. blueberry jam., one egg.
Lunch: Black bean burger(no bun), 5 lg. tortilla chips(1/2 serving), 2 tbs. salsa, 1/2 cup sliced carrots, smooth guacamole packet(100cal.).
I am going to figure out how to get my fruits and veggies in today- that is one thing I have struggled with- but with some planning- it'll get done. I have already cut up a melon- that'll be one(not the whole melon, but you know what I mean... . :)
It is humid today so I am dreading the weed eating- but it's gotta get done and I need to do some work in the flower bed and use the water hose to spray down the porch, patio and deck- so this is going to be my cardio today- Killing 2 birds with one stone...TADA ! :)
It's better to look back on life and say: "I can't believe I did that." than to look back and say: "I wish I did that."
Kris, forgot to say - enjoy your dinner out with your parents this evening- that is so special. Happy Anniversary to your Mom and Dad- 60 years is awesome!
Muril you sound busy as Kris.
Had to come by and tell about Bubba and dh. He started barking around 11 pm, dh got up thought he might need to go out, took him. Went back to bed, Bubba started barking again, got up to check. He would look at the floor bark, look at dh bark, look at dh bark. Finally dh looked where he was looking, snake. Just a grass snake but who wants a snake in the house. Good boy.
Good for you Natasha on your work out. So exciting about getting to babysit.
Jill I know you are enjoying your stay in motel. Hope you have a relaxing time.
Did any of you see on fb where Jeannies daughter had her hair cut and donated it to locks of love? Sweet girl.
Yard work finished...showered and now I feel human. It wasn't too bad- although I sweated- I was thinking- this is good, I am detoxing! :) The yard and flower bed looks great- it took a while to cut the lavenders off though- have them in a container in the garage- they smell nice but don't like the way they drop off when they die. LOL
DH is getting a room for us-he's on the phone now... it is so expensive to stay in Corolla so we are staying not too far from there- no way will we pay about $300 a night just to bring back our beach boy. LOL Clay sounds excited about coming home- then he'll need a job here. He was saying he would like to go to CO in the winter and work at a ski resort- that child is beginning to spread his wings. I tell you... but he may change his mind. Hope he has a worthwhile job here by then, but he is young and I am proud of him for wanting the adventure of moving around. :)
Dusta, that is really neat about Bubba letting DH know about the snake. Mom used to have a German shepherd years ago- she would go walking-he would tag along(she lives in the boonies, keep this in mind), well, once he saw a snake ahead and warned her about it. I saw that about Jeannie's daughter- she is so cute- looks just like her Mommy! :)
I think it's going to be sandwiches and a salad again tonight. I have had some cantaloupe so have had a serving of fruit. :)
Macie used to have an orange tinge to her skin because she loved sweet potatoes and carrots the best when she first started eating baby food. Pretty color though. Neat how our bodies are what we eat.
Off to do some things- we will leave out of here early in the morning- thinking it will take about 7 hours to get there. I think I may have time to crochet a bunch of booties and slippers en route. :)
Dusta, Yeah! Bubba! good dog!
I did see that on FB about Jeannie's daughter, so cute! she looks older now!
Thanks for starting us Kris, you know I'm all over the fruits and veggies right now, next Saturday I am GOING to the farmer's market, I keep getting sidetracked! Hopefully I will get enough stuff done next week that I can do that on Saturday morning. I have yet to try some heirloom tomtoes, but they look sooooooo good, that's my goal for next weekend, to find some! :)
my mom always canned apricots and I've never eaten fresh, only her canned, they were soooooooooooo good. I might try some fresh - also found out a friend (from GirlScouts) has chokecherries on her property, I'm gonna go pick some and figure out what to do with them- they make the best jelly in the free world! hahahhaha Haven't had it in so long, didn't even know they were here at all.
just had fish and carrots for lunch with a little bit of rice that I made for Katie ... the boys are having pizza - they were going to go someplace and then at the last minute decided to stay home. I dunno what the heck they are doing ...
okay, better get getting to the laundry, etc. just NEVER goes away! grrrrrrrrr
My "Babies" are growing up!!!!
We just ordered a really nice camera! Woo Hoo- about time- this was our C'mas present together- remember? LOL Talk about delayed gratification. It as on sale and free shipping! Yay!
Rebecca, you are eating so so healthy - so proud of you. Hey, us veggie & fruit eaters are just gonna be healthy and attractive, right? Works for me! Yet another wonderful reason to chow down on healthy fruits and veggies. I have done a couple loads of laundry and going to have to stop after while. We have packed already so we are set to leave in the morning.
Off to fix a sandwich, sliced tomato and salad for supper. I will have a serving of grapes by bedtime- I think I have done fairly well on my fruits and veggies today- better than normally.
Has had a good day today! ate healthy for breakfast (at the motel) around noon we checked out and headed to E-ville. went to a couple stores (just browsing) then met up with my parents to eat lunch/supper at Cheddars. First time we have been there...I got the chicken salad and it was HUGE! Brought 1/2 home. Then went to Best Buy to get my parents a GPS then to the Fresh Market! A very nice grocery store...like others have said...a little pricey, but I don't mind paying more money for things that are good for you! Bought some fresh shrimp to grill for lunch tomorrow, also a few other things...blueberries, sweet cherries, sweet potatoes, nut mixtures...
Kris thank you for starting us off new this week! Eating more veggies and fruits is something that I am working really hard on doing...
Waving to everyone! Will probably be back tomorrow, but not sure about what we might have going on Monday since dh is off work...
Hi Girls!Tonight Sean and I went after work to Walmart to get The Hunger Games (did you get your copy, Rebecca?) Anyway... while there we looked at the discount games for Xbox... well, i found the Biggest Loser game for only 20 bucks! Also got a Kinect Sports game too for the same price. Both physical activities :) I cant wait to get Biggest loser in, get it set up and see how it goes. It does a 30 minute fitness test first, to find your fitness level, you input info about yourself, and it sets up a plan based on your physical abilities and your health, etc. Im so excited to try it out! For now, it wont be my main workout, because I need to see what its about, try it a bit first ya know. I dont wanna wake up and be groggy and trying to learn a new move LOL. So will do it a couple times aside from my regular workouts for now. Maybe gonna do the fitness test either tonight or tomorrow night.Rebecca, good job on your healthy eating girl! Fish and veggies and rice, you sound like a supermodel :PMuril, yeah, OBX isnt the cheapest place to stay. Hope you found something better priced. You cant stay where Clay stays, that one night? Have fun, its a nice drive out there! When does Dawn leave again? Maybe youll run into her! Hehe. Im surprised you two live so close and havent gotten together yet. I wish some of yall lived closer to me! Id go as far as Idaho or Oregon for a weekend or something. Yay on the new camera! Enjoy that! Pretty proud of my food choices today. I ended up with...Breakfast - ww toast, egg yogurt and coffeeSnack - Nutrigrain bar and a light baby bellLunch - Chicken Sandwich on ww sandwich thin, 12 mini carrots and 2 T hummusDinner - Homemade chili and 2 rolls
bwaaaahaaaaahaaa oh Natasha that is too funny! yup, that's me a supermodel ......for ... old people? chubby old people? hahahahahahahah you made me laugh hard!
Well, it sounded like super healthy type skinny people food to me! Its a good thing :P
