PROLOGUE: *******Have you ever visited a foreign country?**************When faced with the customs of another culture, isn't it easy to assume the familiar way is right and theirs is wrong rather than just being different?********************************************What factors made Gloria believe they would be adopting a girl?************************************************Have you heard about China's one-child policy, or the reason families prefer boys?*************************************************Have you ever felt a deep connection to someone at first sight?*****************************************************************************************Gloria and Jim expect an infant, but instead get a 10-yr old. What is something in your life that turned out differently than you planned?******************************************************************************************Kai reveals that Lily's height and weight are in the 20th percentile for American children but in the 90th percentile for Chinese children. What does this mean to you?*******************************************************************************************Kai is the second daughter, and has returned from studying in America. Lily is the fourth daughter. Kai speaks of the sacrifices of the first and third daughters. What might those sacrifices be?***********************************************************************Kai refuses to dishonor her sisters by acting on her emotions, even though she cries as Lily us taken away and she didn't even cry at her mother's funeral. Is there anything she could've done differently? Would showing how she felt and causing a scene have changed anything?***************************************************************************

CHAPTER 1:**********Kai mentions "Feng shui" several times. Feng means wind and shui means water. In Chinese culture, wind and water are associated with good health, thus goid Feng shui means good fortune and bad Feng shui means bad luck, or bad misfortune. What would it mean to disrupt a person's Feng shui?***********************************************************************************Kai's desire to see Lily interferes with her ability to eat or sleep. Have you ever wanted something so badly that you couldn't eat or sleep?*******************************************************How much of Kai's desire to see Lily do you think is driven out of loyalty to her mother?*****************************What is your first impression of Lily/Joy from reading the PI's report?********************************************Joy is going through a rebellious phase. How much of. This is due to her being adopted and how much do you think is just typical teen behavior?************************************************Kai tries to be professional and stick to the facts when explaining the medical situation to the Powells, even though she is holding back strong personal feelings. Does this give you any insight into situations that doctors face? How would the Powells have reacted if Kai were emotional?

I've never visited a foreign country but some of my friends have and have told me lots of stories! One went to China and she said they didn't wash their hands even after changing dirty diapers and going in to handle food. But another friend who visited both Mexico and Antigua said in both countries the people kept their floors so clean you could eat off them, although they frequently ate meals outdoors. ********I have heard about China's one-child policy since I was very young, as it is an effort to reduce the population growth. I have heard stories about mothers forced to abort or give up their children. The families want boys because by custom it is the boys who take care of the parents in their old age. Human rights activists have tried to ban ultrasounds in countries like this when it is done merely for predicting the sex of a child. What was happening is the mother would abort if it was a girl and keep trying for a boy. There has also been some outrage at China because wealthy families were allowed multiple children, so the law was not fairly administered. ********I can only imagine the sacrifices first and third daughter made to allow Kai to become a doctor. The travel fees, the tuition, and all the other expenses.... They probably only ate one meal a day and never meat. I'm sure they were cold in the winter and their clothes were threadbare. And probably much more, not to mention that the family was torn apart. ********If Kai had acted differently and showed her emotions as Lily was being taken away, it wouldn't have changed the outcome. I think it would've made her feel guilty. I'm not sure how it would've affected Gloria. She might've felt sorry for Kai. But she also would have panicked. ********

Kai couldn't eat or sleep as the time to see Lily grew closer. I remember being like that for weeks, anticipating the birth of my son. I wanted to know what he would look like, feel like, sound like, etc. I couldn't wait. Kai probably had a strong desire to please her mother, and this was her last wish left unfulfilled at her death. By reuniting the family, Kai would be earning that seal of approval from her mother. To me, Joy's behavior is just typical teenage stuff. But I think what makes it worse is that Gloria is in denial mode and refuses to acknowledge the past. Kai is very professional in her meeting with the Powells. If she had shown her true emotions in the beginning, they would have shut her out completely and denied her any access to Lily.

I just finished. A lot going on in my world, so took me longer than usual. The last few chapters skipped several years. I thought it interesting that the author mentioned she based this book on the stories of three different people. I've often thought my life story would make three books! Lol Amy Marie
