Well, I'm from the Midwest but I think it is dry everywhere. Is it affecting what you buy at the Farmer's Market or what you will put "by" this year from your garden?
One of the things that we love and I cook with a lot (usually) is blueberries and they are pricey here right now. Even a few growers in northern Indiana cannot get anyone to pick so they only have pick-your-own.
Canteloupes are high too.
On the other hand we are eating green and yellow squash in one way or another every day!!! Sometimes it is in a veggie stir-fry, occasionally it is fried with tomatoes over pasta and sometimes it is sauteed and put on a plate as a bed for baked salmon.

We have been dry here too, but this has been the best year I've had in a while for peppers. Tomatoes are starting to ripen, I get a couple every other day or so. Love the taste of fresh home grown tomatoes, beats the store bought variety every time. When I get a larger amount that are ripe, I will be canning salsa.

I'm part of a CSA in Wisconsin. We've been getting a lot of onions, garlic and potatoes—which inevitably end up in soup. Yellow tomatoes and kale were a part of last week's bin. I've been sauteing the kale and folding it into omelets for dinner. The tomatoes are too juicy and delicious to make into anything—I eat them raw while I'm cooking.
Is there a particular fruit or vegetable you just can't get enough of during the summer? For me, it's peaches and tomatoes.

Heather, for me, it's tomatoes. There simply isn't anything to compare to the taste of a home grown tomato. We've grown some this summer but with our extreme August heat, they are just about gone. Peaches and summer squash come in a close second.

There are never enough peaches or tomatoes for me. In fact I call all tomatoes past those beautiful warm ones of summer "fake" tomatoes! We have not been lucky here at home though and have a lot of our tomatoes splitting. We do find a lot of Heirloom tomatoes at the Farmers' Market and enjoy them though.
I have been trying to use all greens, spinach, kale, even mustard greens, in any way I can to get them into our diet more too.
Struesel topped peach mini pies. I picked up a market basket of peaches over the weekend, these cute little pies fit the bill nicely. They were plenty sweet so I only used half the sugar I normally would in the filling and the topping is made with reduced fat butter.
It's a nice way for me to get my pie fix without breaking the bank.

I'm fixing my version of succotash.... I steam/saute fresh corn off the cob, small diced sweet onion, small diced red bell pepper, seeded and small diced zucchini, small sliced green beans, minced garlic, and seasonings. (Italian seasonings or Penzey's Arizona Seasoning, for example) I put a little oil and some (1/4-1/2 cup depending on how much I'm cooking) water into a large frying pan, toss in the veggies, bring it to a simmer, cover it and steam it for 5 minutes. I then uncover it and allow the water to evaporate. I saute and season with garlic salt & pepper, and spices. It's wonderful served with just about anything. I make leftovers into a "salad" by mixing them with Newman's Italian Dressing.

OOOOH that sounds delicious, Ann! I live in a condo which is in pretty much total shade now, so I can't grow veggies, but I do go to the Farmer's Mkt on Saturdays. I think I will be adding a few of those veggies to my list to make your version of succotash. BTW, don't you LOVE Penzeys spices?? I just discovered them this year-they are just soooo fresh compared to the store bought ones. And YES< I have the Arizona seasoning-it is just so good! Can't wait to try this.

Everything here is really dry too and our tomatoes are just starting to come in now, but few and far between. Our farmer's Mkt has them, but they are very expensive! Most of the veggies are suffering and our apple crop here in the eastern half of MI was totally wiped out by a late frost. The west coast of MI didn't get that frost, so we will have some apples, although they will probably be very expensive this year. Apple and soy beans are some of MI biggest crops and the soybeans are also suffering from this drought.
My fav's are homegrown (esp heirloom) tomatoes, peaches, cantalope, watermelon WITH seeds, and blueberries (also expensive right now). Actually, I have never met a fruit that I haven't liked and I love most veggies (except okra). My favorite is sweet corn on the cob straight from the garden!
I used to have a huge garden (80 X180) until we moved to our condo which is now almost totally shaded by two huge maple trees, so growing veggies is pretty much out of the question. I now get most of everything from the farmers Mtk or a few farmers that I know. At least I know it wasn't trucked here from a thousand miles or so and is very fresh!
I have worked for a family that has had a farm market in our town since the 30's. They're claim to fame is pickling cucumbers and strawberries. However they have any veg that's local and from Eastern WA. Like many farms, they co-op/ or have a sister farm to bring in variety's of produce. I would have to say that the red haven peaches are my big buy right now. I peel and freeze 3-4 bags and make cooking sauces to freeze as well. Peach crisps, grilled peaches with grilled meat, summer salad with peaches, spinach, feta cheeses, green onion and balsamic. Fresh herbs are a must with that salad! Yep this week it's peaches!

Yep, Penzeys is the best! Arizona seasoning is also great on sauteed cabbage! I steam/saute it the same way. Have you tried the salt free "Forward"...zesty and delicious! Mural of Flavor and Fox Point are also favorites!
