I have seen t.v. commercials and the plastic "slide" shelves for spice bottles (or any bottles, etc.) advertised in the stores too. Are these good? They are white and fit inside a cabinet and are supposed to take up a small space. I thought that would be nice because I'm not tall, and reaching inside a cabinet is not always easy- I loose my balance on a step stool too. I was just wondering if anyone tried that. They are $20, and have seen them at Bed Bath and Beyond stores besides t.v.

Hi, Mary ~ Yes, I have that type of shelf insert in my bathroom cabinet, giving me space for lots of little things, and that works well.  They can expand to fit the inside of your cabinet, which really makes it nice, and it does let you see the items at the back of the shelf because they are higher than the items at the front.

My spices are in a corner cabinet, with a lazy susan, so this insert will not work for my spices, but I made something similar by using styrofoam circles that I cut to fit around the center spindle.

I have spices on lazy susans in the cabinet now, but it still is a bit too "out of reach" sometimes and bottles get pushed to the center where I can't see what I have. I'll try this shelf. Thank you for advice, Beema.

I have my spices on tiered shelving in my cabinet and although I'm not OCD, I do have them in alphabetical order only because I can find them quickly that way. The over flow is in a drawer just below the cabinet, also alphabetized. This works well for me but I'm always interested in how other people organize theirs.

we have LOTS of spices....and I keep them on lazy susans....1 a 2 shelf lazy susan and I keep them alphabetical...makes it easier finding them.....I do keep my chili spices together however....and the cinnamon sits after the red pepper flakes....have to keep the cinnamon AWAY from the chili powder....made a mistake ONCE and it was awful....cinnamon instead of chili powder in taco meat....YUCK!!!!!  even rinsing the meat in lots of water would not get all the taste out...

I actually have lots of pantry items on large lazy susans....got them at Bed Bath and Beyond....love them....

  • Re: Organizing Spices

Hi, Shelly - I'm glad to know I am not the only one who has LOTS of spices.  I actually made a list of what I considered to be the essentials, and OMG - there are 68 on the list.  I tried to keep mine in alpha order, but the jars are different sizes and heights, and that just didn't work in the space I have to use.  So....  they are arranged by size, but in groups -like all the seeds together, all the sweet ones for baking together, all the herbs together, etc.  And I am a freak about having another one on hand, so the minute I use the last of one, it goes on my shopping list.

Now the next question should be: how do you keep track of the condiments in your fridge?  It seems to me that half the fridge is full of things like ketchup, pickles, relish, mustards, worcestershire sauce, hot sauce, chile sauce, lots of seasonings and salad dressings, etc.  I hardly have room for anything else.  So, WHAT DO YOU HAVE IN YOUR FRIDGE?

Organizing spices?? Pffft! That takes all the fun out of having 3 jars of chili powder and 2 jars of cinnamon because you were certain there were none, LOL.

Oh, goodness!  As organized as I may be that doesn't improve my memory - I still have 3 jars of chili powder and 2 jars of cinnamon, but now they are sitting side by side, keeping each other company,  instead of on two different shelves.  Stick out tongue
