A full page on bake sale tips? A full page on how to have someone over for coffee? A full page on how to mix mayonnaise with other ingredients? A two-page spread for an outdoor kitchen with a super-short story? So many introductory type pages that are wasted space (pg. 12, 39, 48, 62)? Four pages on burgers with way to big graphics? Don't get me started on all the ads!
I don't get TOH so I can't really answer you. I get S&D and although I'm not hating it, after several years I am getting tired of it. I will definitely be changing to another magazine when the subscription is over.
So my question to you -- and others -- is: What magazine out there is good?? If you weren't getting TOH and could get any other, which one would it be??
There probably are some who get other magazines. Which ones do you like?

A friend lets me browse through her Rachel Ray magazines, but I can't stand how she puts herself on the cover of every issue. I also don't find much I would actually cook in there. Anyone have other ideas???
I get Paula Deen , I love her recipes but she also has a ton of unrelated information & promotion of friends business etc. I used to get Rachel but I find her recipes are all in the same gendre,and the magazine is too commercial.(.Hot deals includes purses that are a "steal" at $250.00!)
I do get Everday food by Martha Stewart, I like the recipes & info re certain spices or a cooking technique.But some issues are things I would never attempt to make, some alittle too basic, some too complicated.
I was given the Food Network magazine as a gift but it too has alot of promotion & non cooking info/ads. I also got Bon Appetit for a while , it is fun from time to time but more that I usually would make at home...plus we are not big on eine which is a main stay of all gourmet magazines.
Taste of Home and Simple & delicious remain my main stays, although they have changed I find they have the most" real" recipes of any other magazine, food that real people would make plus the subscriptions are less expensive1
Thanks for all that information SuSey. I live in Canada and the expense for some subscriptions is really unreasonably higher than the American price. TOH is definitely a better price.
I have looked through the Everyday Food -- find lots of those at garage sales -- and I sort of enjoy them. It is one I would consider.

I always like Cooking Pleasures but had to cut back on my subscriptions and that one got cut. I'd gotten it for years. I used to get and buy Paula's but it's too expensive for what you get. Her special issues are in the $8-9 range. Too much! I do like Taste of the South. I just bought their 5 year anniversary issue and it's got so many good recipes. Every once in a while I'll buy Southern Living but it got repetitive over the years. Kept seeing articles about the same places and similiar recipes. Now I really buy all my magazines from my library bookstore. I can get them for 10 cents to 50 cents an issue. They may be a couple of months or even a year old but the ideas and recipes still work! I'm certainly more choosy in these more challenging economic times! I also swap with a girlfriend.

That library store sounds wonderful. My library is small; they don't even have any cooking magazines to borrow.
I like the recipes in Paula Deen magazine, but I don't have a subscription anymore. I think the magazine is very thin and expensive for what you get. Used to get Racheal Ray mag and found that I never made any of the recipes. Same with Food Network mag. Very pretty to look at and read, but not very realistic for my everyday cooking. I like Midwest Living. There are always good recipes in there.
I still love TOH. Sure, I miss the old mag style, but I think it's still the best value out there. And I love reading it. It's one of the few magazines that I read word for word, cover to cover. I buy S&D and Healthy Cooking often. But TOH is still more my style.

I totally agree with you SuSey. I, too, have checked out the magazines you mentioned but always come back to the TOH family. Yes, it has changed - just like everything else in this day and age - but I find more recipes in the TOH magazines that my family loves than anywhere else. I realize with the economic conditions today, all magazines have to have some advertising. Thank goodness the TOH magazines don't have page after page that some magazines have (such as Cooking LIght).Although some people claim the advertising is due to Reader's Digest buying out TOH, the advertising only started within the past year or so and TOH has been owned by RD since 2002. They tried to keep the advertising out of the magazines as long as they could. I will definitely keep my subscriptions to all the TOH magazines.

I have to agree with everyone else. I have looked at other cooking magazines and I have even cancelled my subscription to TOH, but I keep coming back. It's the most reality based cooking magazine I can find. It used to be when the mag came, I would have post its all around the edges designating reciepes to try, but not any more. Some ideas that I haven't seen posted here yet are using your library. Even if they don't have a cooking magazine, you can interlibrary loan them from another library. Also, at my library they have TOH yearbooks that are full of reciepes. Some are dated, but they still have good ideas in them!
Hi everyone and thanks for all the input. It's not that I am really finding fault with TOH magazines-- it's more that I am ready for a change. I am starting to enjoy articles as much as the recipes.

I don't usually see these on the magazine shelves here in Canada except for the first one so I expect they would not be cheap to have sent here. But -- so be it.
So I just googled "Cuisine at Home" to find subscription costs
In USA for 2 years $28
In Canada for 2 years $69
Does it really cost that much extra to send it here -- I know there is some extra in the exchange -- but ??? I may have to order it to an American address and then get it that way -- then that person could read it too. That's a real deal -- one subscription -- two subscribers -- ends up in Canada.
