The first to bring Taco Salad [made at home } for entertaining. I served it to about 8 couples at an annual dinner and the gentlemen said the would not come back next year if I didn't serve that and the Jailhouse Chili I learned to make in New Mexico. It was verydifferernt for my Carolina Lowcoutry friends !! I finished the meal with Julia Child's Chocolate Mousse.
I learned to cook when I was 7 to do special things for Daddy . He had a sweet tooth and Mama was in bad health. Granny would make him things off and on. We didn't have a bakery in our small town of Kingstree, SC. When Granny went out of town she always brought us 'sweet things'. My uncle ran a mill in Tennessee for a while and sent Mama and Granny some very finely ground corn meal.Mama put it in the cabinet and our cook moved it. Well, I went in the kitchen to make a yellow cake with chocolate icing. Mama called out to me and told me to make sure I didn't use that corn meal. Well, you know the rest !! It was not where Mama said it was, it was in the place the flour jar was usually in. The cake turned out beautifully, 3 tall layers with boiled chocolate frosting . Daddy cut himself a piece as soon as he ate supper. When I asked him what he thought of it he got a thoughtful look on his face, hesitated a moment and said," Well,Baby, it tastes a little like sweet cornbread with chocolate icing on it !!" Bubba and the dog sure enjoyed it !! Running a close second was the BLT I made my aunt that turned out to be a BCT..... I wasn't sure of the diffence in things at such an early age so I wound up maling her a Bacon, Cabbage and Tomato sandwich !!
In a hundred years it won't matter !! The most important things in life AREN'T things.
