I'm pretty proud of winning 15 ribbons in pie contests in the last 5 years, of being a finalist in a Sunset Magazine cooking contest (I made it to the top 15 out of 7,000+ entries), and of being published in Taste of Home and other cooking publications.
After dinner one evening, I threw some chicken bones, veggies and water into a soup pot and set it on simmer. My plan was to let it gently boil for a couple of hours, then before I went to bed I would strain and put the broth in the refrigerator. In the morning, I would skim off the congealed fat and carry on with whatever soup I wanted to make. Great plan, right? Instead, I went to bed without remembering the pot of bubbling broth, and in the morning, I awoke to a kitchen filled with thick, acrid smoke. The bones and veggies had burned and fused to the pot, and the pot itself was so hot it was nearly melted. The only reason my smoke alarm didn't go off was I had both kitchen doors shut, so that effectively trapped the smoke in there; it took months for the smell to go away. Moral of the story: Never, ever set a pot to cook on the stove, intending to come back to it later, unless you set a timer to remind you. Second moral: Never, ever begin to make broth AFTER dinner.
