My Greatest Cooking Triumph While living in Istanbul, in a villa right on the Bosphorus, my then husband graduated from the Turkish Army Officers War College, the only American to do so at that time, and we had to host a reception for the 250 Turkish Army Officers and their wives. No catering services existed.... so, I prepared all the appetizers and buffet items by myself, and then had to hand write all the name tags, prepare the reception hall with floral centerpieces (also made by me). Preparing the tables with cloths, servers, trays, and plates took two hours.... transporting the food was another challenge.... but, it all got done, and then ..... when the guests began arriving, a Coup d'etat was declared, and everyone was in a "lock down" situation.... meaning on one could go anywhere. The Turkish Officers had a grand old time, eating all my food, drinking (which is normally forbidden) and joking and partying like there was no tomorrow. All ended well, and the story is too long to continue here....
My Biggest Kitchen DisasterIn one of the world's smallest kitchens, my then husband and I decided to turn large jugs of apple cider into the more lively version, by adding a bit of yeast to each of four jugs. We went for a winter's drive, and upon our return six hours later, we discovered shards of glass that had punctured the ceiling, the face of all the wooden cabinets, the floor and even the dining area carpet.... along with foaming cider dripping from every surface and light fixture. Four hours later, we had most of what we could see cleaned up, when I sat down .... on top of more slivers of glass and ended up in the emergency room having glass removed from my posterior, which was more difficult than you would imagine due to my being 6 months pregnant. We all survived the experiment.
My Food For Thought Never decide what you want to be when you grow up... what if you grow up and don't want to be that? Be flexible, continue to learn, make new goals but keep your sights on yourself and what makes you feel good inside.
