My Greatest Cooking TriumphHmmm....that's a toughie. I would have to say that mastering bread making was awesome. I love cooking and experimenting and coming up with my own concoctions. But I would have to say that making honest to goodness 100% Homemade Cajun Chicken Gumbo for the first time while teaching a cooking class to 15 teenagers was a great triumph. Making the roux ("cajun napalm") with all those kid-ohs standing around and making sure no one was burned...that was a triumph in itself. But the result was a rich, yummy, delightful gumbo that everyone loved and is now a favorite. My club teens will ask me to please have it ready for them when they get in from school on wet and cold afternoons. Mmmmm comfort food at its best! :)
My Biggest Kitchen DisasterI learned to NEVER attempt a new recipe when you are catering an event. My club teens and I provided the food for the annual board meeting for the organization for which I work, and I found a recipe for a chicken puff that sounded awesome. I usually have a good eye for recipes, but this time was just disasterous. Rarely do I ever select a recipe that I just absolutely don't like, but this one was horrible. Everyone was kind and gracious and said they enjoyed the puffs, but all I can say is that I am thankful I planned a good assortment of appetizers.
