About Me
No profile added.
I am an "older" mom with an 8-year-old daughter with Down syndrome. I am involved with a local support group for parents of children with DS. Before I married, I cooked fairly elaborate, mostly vegetarian, meals for myself. Since marrying my "meat and potatoes" hubby, my cooking has changed and is largely based on compromises between us. Also, with a child and a full-time (and then some) job, my time for cooking is very limited. I do love trying new recipes and tend to like things that are just slightly "different".
My Greatest Cooking Triumph
I was making my own bread and full meals in my early teen years. I'm not sure I've progressed much since then! But anytime I cook something that both I and my husband like, I feel like I've accomplished something, as our tastes are very different.
My Biggest Kitchen Disaster
Hmmm, I'm sure there have been many! There was a rather involved pumpkin-harvest cake that I was making for Thanksgiving. The recipe called for a square pan, but I was determined to make it round so it would fit on my cake stand. I baked it in my springform pan, and butter and batter seeped out the bottom of the pan. It dripped and burned all over my oven, so by the time guests arrived, it smelled as if I'd burned the house down. Plus we had no cake!
My Food For Thought
When I walk into my kitchen today, I am not alone. Whether we know it or not, none of us is. We bring fathers and mothers and kitchen tables, and every meal we have ever eaten. Food is never just food. It's also a way of getting at something else: who we are, who we have been, and who we want to be. --Molly Wizenberg
