My Greatest Cooking Triumph1) Cooking for my in-laws for the first time! Pork roast, mashed potatoes, bread, salad, my special green bean recipe, strawberry-lemonade, peach tea, and for dessert, strawberry and biscuits. 2) Spaghetti with homemade meat sauce, homemade garlic bread, fresh-baked brownies, and fresh salad using my garden veggies... all feeding 100 for a very successful fundraiser!
My Biggest Kitchen DisasterI was making spaghetti for a fundraiser... I finished the meat sauce fairly quickly and put it in the slow cooker to simmer. Next, I needed to cook 13 lbs. of spaghetti noodles. I cooked the noodles about 6 hours before the dinner was to start. I didn't have a big pot, so I used four little pots and made two batches in each. Unfortunately, after I finished, my husband came in and said he was afraid the noodles would dry out by the time the dinner came around, so we decided to toss them, and cook some more closer to the time of the dinner (why not, they cook in 20 minutes, right?). So, my second batch. I started the batch a few hours later, but this time, I decided to forgo the 8 pots of spaghetti noodles and just cook all thirteen pounds in the slow cooker. Big mistake. First, it took so long to cook, that my husband had to leave for the fundraiser so I lost my helper. Second, by the time the noodles were "done", they were so gummy and starchy that it was like eating glue. Apparently, there is a reason the package directions advise you to use a lot of water... grr. By this time, I am supposed to be at the fundraiser... fortunately, I still have an hour before dinner is supposed to be served. On to batch three. First problem, the slow cooker full of my "gummy" noodles is SO heavy, and with my husband gone, there is no way I can lift it to clean it. Yet, I have to have it to transport the noodles to the fundraiser and keep them warm (unless I'm carrying eight cold pots of noodles). In a panic, and as a last resort, I finally muster up enough adrenaline to heave the pot into the sink where I dump all the noodles. I FINALLY finished third batch, which turned out pretty well (it took another 8 pots though...). Praise the Lord, I was able to get everything to the fundraiser and get it all set out JUST as people were coming in to eat. Coming home was not so pretty. Not only were there cans, and dishes, and noodle packages, etc... all over my kitchen, there were spaghetti noodles everywhere! On the fridge, on the floor, on the wall (where I kept throwing them to see if they were "done"), in the sink,... my husband even found some on the dining room light switches (not really sure how they got there...). On a good note, I have enough spaghetti sauce to last me the rest of the year:)
