My Greatest Cooking TriumphWhen my husband told me that my pie crust was better than my Grandma's pie crust! Grandma's pie crust and pie filling was made from scratch, her pies were always great. My pie crust started out in a box, I have never told him about that. My almost, made from scratch pie crust, put together with fresh fruit, he still says is better than my Grandma's.
My Biggest Kitchen DisasterThe first time I cooked a dinner for a friend (now husband of 29 yrs), wanting to impress him went all out. Fried chicken, mashed potatoes, gravy, stuffing, creamed peas, corn, the pop-bake-and-serve type of dinner rolls, and apple pie with real whip cream. Every thing went great, the pie was baked, cream whipped, chicken fried and finishing in oven with stuffing, potatoes whipped smooth and creamy, can of whole kernal corn ready to be zapped, even the sauce for the creamed peas was smooth with a perfect light buttery flavor. Then disaster with a capital D struck! He had arrived early, but that was OK because every thing was done except for the gravy. I had never made gravy from scratch before. No problem I thought, my cream sauce for the peas was most always perfect, and my Mom said if I could make cream sauce I would have no problem making gravy. Oh, was she wrong! We ended up using butter on the potatoes. After dinner he helped me wash the dishes. When he saw the pan of "gravy" on the stove and tried to stir it - yes, you read that right, he tried to stir it, the teasing started! To this day I still hear about the gravy that did not come out of the pan, even when he turned the pan bottom up, the spoon and gravy never came out of the pan! The pan spoon and "gravy" all ended up in the garbage.
