My Greatest Cooking TriumphMy Mom died in 2001 very suddenly, leaving a husband and
daughter heartbroken. My Dad struggled to hide his loneliness after 34 years of
marriage. I realized that I didn't want to lose any more of my mother than I
already had, so I started cooking her old recipes to ensure that they would live
on even though she didn't, and when my Dad tasted the first one I made and
smiled...it was one of the first genuine smiles I saw during that tough time,
and so THAT is my greatest triumph - making my Dad smile.
My Biggest Kitchen DisasterWhen I was first learning to cook, I decided to make a dish
that called for several garlic cloves. Not realizing that the cloves were part
of a bulb, I put several bulbs of garlic in the dish (I did wonder why it seemed
like a lot but figured it would cook down), and the food tasted pretty bad. My
boyfriend bought me a garlic press after that as a joke and teased me about it
for a long time - thankfully, I still love garlic and now know how to use it
correctly.
My Food For ThoughtI'm not really sure what this question is about, but I can say that for me, food is a way of expressing myself...what I am feeling, who I am, and what I believe in. As I get older, I find myself gravitating toward new techniques and methods of cooking that provide me with much joy in the process and provide those who sample the results with great pleasure. I used to think the greatest joy was eating good food; now I suspect that I enjoy the process at least as much as the result!
