I love cooking and homemaking! Cooking has been my creative outlet for many years. I love Julia Child, (taught me the hand towel around the apron tie string trick, God love her), Craig Claiborne, (stuffed mushrooms to die for), Charlotte Turgeon, (Encyclopedia of Classic Cooking, taught me oodles), and many more! I own 106 cookbooks. I have learned tons of tricks of economy. Little acts of economy save a fortune in the long run. I am always fiddling with recipes to improve flavor, nutrient density, and reduce cost. I believe in great nutrition but NOT in making it a religion. Taste, visual appeal and ease of preparation are very important too.
Martha's Stewart's Christmas Cassoulet scaled down to fit a modest budget feeding a crowd! Also, my Once-in-a-Lifetime-Torte. I call it that because if you make it just once in your life you have cause for jubilation and a great sense of accomplishment! It is truly a work of art. It's the kind of dessert you would make for very special occasions.
LIVER LOAF! Ask my poor husband. Even the dog wouldn't eat it. My first baking powder biscuits were so hard and tough, hubby spray-painted them black and used them for hockey pucks. There may still be one around here somewhere. But now I get raves from everyone I serve them to. Perseverance is sometimes so important in culinary pursuits.
Food is meant to be a social occasion plus. It nourishes the spirit as much as the body. It is said that Jewish mothers had the sense never to do any business or let their relatives do any business whatsoever on empty stomachs. Wise women! My older children tell me some of their greatest memories are coming home from school and smelling the aroma of a good home-cooked meal. It's obviously something that sticks.
