About Me
No profile added.
The basics: 34, married, 3 kids: Cole (12) and twins Samuel and Carly (7). We live in smalltown USA - really, really smalltown USA. I have a great job working for a telecommunications company in the Network Operations Department - have been here for 16 years now. My husband is a Heavy Equipment Operator for a construction company - he typically operates a bulldozer to build things like roads, driveways, building pads, etc. As far as cooking - I go in spurts - I'll cook like crazy 4 days in a row, and then I don't want to cook for the next 3 days. My biggest problem is knowing what to cook in advance. I do much better if I plan my meals out for the entire week & get what I need in my weekly trip to the store. I like variety, and I love that I can access all these TOH recipes online for last minute ideas.
My Greatest Cooking Triumph
Every point in time after I learned how to fry an egg is considered a triumph. :-) Actually, there are a couple of favorites that my husband asks for again and again - Mexican Chicken Manicotti & cheesy hashbrowns are his favorites - as long as I put cheese in it, he'll eat it. My Taste of Home magazines have given me so many great ideas and 'keeper' recipes - it has helped me learn to LIKE cooking for the most part. I consider the Dulce de Leche Cheesecake one of the top recipes I've gotten from TOH, and gave myself a big pat on the back for pulling it off. Although I've had a springform pan sitting in my cupboard for years - this was the first time I had actually used it! I would have been sorely disappointed if I had painstakingly put that cheesecake together & it didn't turn out - but it was terrific! Best recipe yet!
My Biggest Kitchen Disaster
Oh there have been so many. My mom did not like us to be in the kitchen when she was cooking, so I REALLY started from scratch. I remember when I was about 13 and had a babysitting job - I was going to make macaroni & cheese & had the noodles all cooked & ready to go when I discovered there was no milk in the refrigerator. I decided water would work just as well....BLECH...straight to the trash. When I was 18 and moved out on my own, I actually had to call home and ask my younger brother how to FRY AN EGG...yes, it really was that bad. I lived on cereal and PB & J until I met my husband. He taught me how to properly season meat, some basic dishes, and how to experiment with food.
My Food For Thought
1). Letting your kids cook with you is great one-on-one time! My oldest son is 12, and can put together any basic dish. He regularly trims, seasons, and grills the meat around here because my husband works late hours during the summer. My younger children are good at finding and identifying different ingredients, are learning measurements (which helps with math at school), and kitchen safety (not only knives and stovetops, but rinsing vegetables, washing your hands after handling meat, etc). 2). If you're inviting people over for a party - BRING ON THE FOOD. My family always cooks too much food - but really - can you cook too much food? Everyone loves leftovers! On the other hand, I constantly find myself bringing extra food to my husband's side of the family because a) they never make enough, b)they have no variety, and c)bland, bland, bland. Even his grandma is not a good cook - come on - grandma's are supposed to be great cooks, it's their niche, lol!!
My Interests
Hmmmm....romance novels - anything from historic to western to modern day romances. Every now and then I'll mix it up with a suspense novel. My favorite pastime is reading a great book while in the whirlpool tub - I've been known to spend 3 hours in there! Old movies - prior to the mid-1950's - love those. I just think the original Hollywood glamour queens were the best actresses and were so beautiful. I have a few favorites - topping the list - Bette Davis, Claudette Colbert, Elizabeth Taylor, Katherine Hepburn, Sophia Loren. And then there's baseball season - not that I watch pro-baseball, but I loved to play ball in school, and now that my kids are all playing, I love watching them play and practicing with them at home. This year, with 3 kids playing ball, we were running to games at least 4 days a week during baseball season. Sounds crazy, but they all love it and so do I.
