My Greatest Cooking TriumphI love entering cooking contests! (As a matter of fact, I sent in so many recipes to "Country" in the early 90's that I was invited to be a Field Editor for TOH when it started in 1993!) While I have won a number of contests over the years, nothing could top my contest win in 2011...I won the grand prize of $25,000 in Taste of Home's Cookbook Recipe Contest with my Neapolitan Cheesecake.
My Biggest Kitchen DisasterWhen I baked at the coffee shops, I made a lot of cheesecakes. Customers often made special requests and I was able to experiment and perfect new cheesecake recipes. I baked in a commercial convection oven, which had a tendency to bake hot and fast, so I was always adjusting cooking times. After a request for a Turtle Cheesecake, I came up with an idea and popped it in the oven. After baking for the usual time, it appeared to be done, so I cooled it and then refrigerated it overnight, just as I had done with all the other cheesecakes I had made. The next morning, when I removed the springform pan, the whole cheesecake collapsed and gushed out onto the floor! My co-worker and I stood there, dumbfounded, until she remarked, "Well, I guess you won't be serving that today!!!" We had a good laugh about it (what else could we do?) and then got busy cleaning up the mess. Needless to say, I had to tweek my cooking time a bit! (You can find my recipe at http://www.tasteofhome.com/recipes/layered-turtle-cheesecake and yes, this is my adjusted recipe!!!)
