My Greatest Cooking TriumphAfter taking a few lessons in cake decorating, I made my own wedding cake from scratch! My girlfriend made the roses because I hadn't had that lesson yet, but I did all the rest. It was a white tier cake with pale pink hearts and darker pink roses, and the couple on top was a bride in white and a groom in Army Dress Greens, just like my husband and I.
My Biggest Kitchen DisasterWhen I was 9 and just learning to bake, I decided (with permission, of course) to bake peanut butter cookies for our weekend guests while my folks entertained in the living room. I creamed and stirred, mixed and rolled balls, flattened with a fork, and baked.... and oh, how wonderful they smelled! But when I served them, the looks on the faces of these lucky recipients ranged from bewilderment to horror!! I couldn't understand it... until I took a bite! You see, I didn't realize that there was a difference between measuring Crisco solid shortening, and Crisco oil. I had watched Mom melt solid Crisco when she ran out of oil, so thought they were interchangeable. Boy, was I mistaken! Those heavenly smelling cookies tasted like H-E-double-hockey-sticks! They were all peanut butter and grease.
