I started cooking at the age of seven, and still have my Junior Cook Book from Better Homes & Gardens®. As soon as I was old enough, my mom signed me up with a local 4-H cooking group. I also spent time in the kitchen with my mom, grandmas, aunts and great grandma. At a young age, I enjoyed flipping through cookbooks to find new recipes for my mom and I to try. Now thirty years later, I have a large collection of cookbooks and several years worth of Taste of Home magazines. Thank goodness my husband of twenty years is willing to try new recipes. After making a new recipe, I always write the date and year along with a rating. I also make notes of what I changed or would change the next time around.
My Greatest Cooking Triumph
I would have to say the first time that I made my Great Grandma's Sweet Pickles. They were so crisp and had a great flavor. It was also a great feeling to know that I was the fourth generation to be making these pickles. They are now staples in my pantry/fruit room.
My Biggest Kitchen Disaster
When I was ten, I made deviled eggs and grabbed the cinnamon instead of paprika. My mom did not catch me until I had sprinkled the whole batch. We scrapped it off the best we could but they still tasted of cinnamon. To this day, I double check which jar of spice that I have pulled out of the cupboard.
