My Greatest Cooking TriumphGetting all three of my daughters to be able to cook, and enjoy it! It sounds silly, but I think of it as a "triumph" because I had two sisters, and only me and the eldest one learned how to cook. The middle one never did. (Boiling water is somewhat of a challenge to her! She shines in other areas, though.) So I think it is good that all three of mine not only know how, but enjoy it as well. In fact my youngest is looking at going into a culinary school after she graduates in a few years!
My Biggest Kitchen DisasterBack when I was in high school, my mother went back into the work force, so I took over cooking dinner for my family after I got home from school. She would leave me detailed instructions on what to make and how to make it. One night I was making Swiss Steak. We had this REALLY old gravy shaker (the kind you mixed the water and flour in.) Well, if you didn't hold the lid just right, it would pop off with the pressure built up when it was shaken. You guessed it. It exploded ALL OVER my mom's kitchen! All I could do was sit on the floor and cry. My mom came home and I'm sure was trying very hard to not laugh, got right on it and had it all cleaned up and the gravy made in no time. I always appreciated the fact that she didn't get mad at me for it, because it was quite a mess!
My Food For ThoughtI guess the one thing I would say, is to make time for "family dinners". As my kids have gotten older and their friends come over, I realize how unusual it is for them to sit at the table and have an evening meal together. For us, it is the best time of the day. I'm so glad I did not fall to the temptation to let life's busyness take that away from us.
