I live smack in the middle of downtown Indianapolis with my guy and a fat, goofy cat named Oreo. I love living downtown, and never get tired of seeing the lights and hearing the sounds of downtown city life. I love to bake, love to cook, and I peek through restaurant online menus to get ideas for new dinners we can make at home. Eating out, what we have for our meal influences greatly on what we prepare at home. I also love to crochet, love to read, and love to be out on our motorcycle!
Pie crust. I attempted it once many years ago. One day I found Martha Stewarts "pate brisee' pie crust recipe, and decided what the heck. I had some apples. So, I busted out the food processor (that Allen gave me for christmas! What a sweetheart!) and tried it. Rolled it out. Made the pie, even latticed the top crust. Lets just say that Allen was picking off the top crust of the pie to eat and left the filling! Its now a much-requested recipe from anywhere I take a pie.
I've been cooking for about 10 years, after taking a three hour culinary course through high school. My biggest disasters were yeast breads. I lived in Minnesota for three years, and I dont know if it was all the humidity or what, but I could never get bread to turn out right. I made an oatmeal bread. Rose up okay on the first rise, but when it baked, it turned into a brick. It was terrible! Or a caramel apple crisp that completely dried out in the crock pot. The vanilla cupcakes that for some reason turned into little cupcake rocks. They tasted okay, but were like double-thick poundcake. I also have problems with chocolate chip cookies, I have yet to find a recipe that will actually turn out right.
Cooking to me means cooking from the heart, pouring all you have into creating the dish. Soul food, southern food. You are not making food to just make it. You are cooking to nourish and give strength to those eating it, and they will remember you for it.
